The Best RPG EVER!
In your opinion what is it and why?
I say Fallout is the bestest. I like the setting, and the guns, and the doggy, and the ladies in tight leather...er I mean the variety of armor, and the story is well written.
In a close second I would have to say Castle of the Winds, 'cause it was the first RPG I played.

Baldur's Gate 2 for story and characters and engine.
Neverwinter Nights for the editor
Pool of Radiance (the first gold box game) for getting me started.

It'd be a tie for me:
Fallout
Morrowind
Of course they are different games. Fallout had a kick ass story and some really fun turn based combat and amazing character advancement (woo... feats!). Baldur's Gate II is closest to Fallout in that kind of RPG.
Morrowind is an entire WORLD created around you, which is out there for you to explore and dig around in. Very nicely unlinear, allowing you to go around and do what you wanted.

MORROWIND!
Nothing else can come close in the world category- , or even (IMHO) graphics-wise.

I love morrowind too, but when you really look at it its too simple; the "world" is one big cut & paste dungeon crawl. And the leveling system is the same system thats been used for eons now; hack hack hack ding "ooh time to level up!"
but when you play the main quest for the first time and finish it you really think its a great game

all of these for the same reason: you are given a set of behaviors to follow, and it is your choice to follow them or not. except for w7, you were not directly punished for not following the rules or making a mistake here or there.

I consider the Thief games RPGs. So they're my vote. Closely followed by Deus Ex.
Morrowind had promise, but it ultimately failed to live up to it. Not a bad game though.
It's problems (for me) included:
Rotten performance on a decent machine.
The old 'boring melee combat' versus 'over-elaborate magic system' problem.
Easy to build an uber-character.
Utterly joyless overland combat, falling firmly into the 'rats and bats' enemy school.
Pointlessly complex level design. Whoever designed Vivec should be shot. I didn't buy the game to run up and down ramps.
Easy potion abuse.

Easily If I like a game, I can play it many many times over.
In fact, replayability is a must for all of my games. 10-hour games just aren't acceptable.

Probably Morrowind, closely followed by Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters. Of course this is RPGs only, I have many more prefered strategy games, such as Alpha Centauri.

Diablo 2, though I'm suprised it does not count as a FPS.

well maybe Im the freak then, I cant play the same storyline more than 3 or 4 times before I have to strain myself to complete it again. It just gets too easy and boring.

Morrowind and Fallout, for the reasons he stated

Computer role playing games suck.
The best roleplaying game ever IMHO was Games Workshop's now discontinued Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

Actually, I preferred Fallout2. Fallout1 was great but way too buggy (now, I may have not played it with the latest patches)

Fallout is a Role Playing Game in Isometric view (à la Civ2) that is set in a post-apocalyptic world.
The perks of the game are:
-an exceptional character development, that is extremely deep yet simple to use.
- a great, original and humorous atmosphere
- Plenty of different ways to solve problems, and even to win the main quest
- An immense quantity of complete dialogues
This comes from a Morrowind lover: Get Fallout Tass. It's an order. The RPG experience is different than Morrowind, but Fallout has strengths Morrowind simply cannot have (but it works the other way around too: Fallout is absolutely not as immersive as Morrowind)
