Actually, there is a significant number of people who join in order to get an education not instead of one.

Care to enlighten me? I don't pay much attention to the "benefits" on my LES. Pretty much all I see is an increase in pay from year to year (not that it increases proportionatly to the amount of work/risk).

A lot of the noise is coming from the whiniest generation, who also happen to be the greatest net beneficiaries (as a generation) of Federal Largesse in the history of the United States.

He is talking about the"Greatest Generation". The people from the "Baby Boom" of WWI. They grew up during the depression, fought in WWII then had massive amounts of babies when the war was over. Well, now all those people from WWII are getting pretty old and they want their benneys they were promiced way back when...
The "Whiniest Generation" is the tail end of the Gen Xer's IMNSHO.

Yep that's it exactly. My father in law is a good case in point. He served in the OSS in WW2, and then the USAF until the 1960s. Then he got a job with the Feds until he retired. He has pensions from the military and the feds (ie double dipping), including an incredible array of health benefits. He's in his mid 80s and against his own doctor's advice is getting treatment for the very early stage prostrate cancer (the odds of him living long enough for it to matter are tiny) as well as two hip replacement surgeries. He consumes enough useless health care in a year to fund a children's clinic. And he's rich as sh!t too.
Old people are almost always going to be the wealthiest segment of the population. Sure there are exceptions, but they have simply had much more time to build up assets. It makes zero sense to pay this guy social security in addition to his two other government pensions, in addition to his medical benefits from three seperate government programs. That money would be much better spent on children, who are the most likely group in our population to be in poverty and the most likely to benefit from medical care.

Yea, most of my mother's side is like that. They did their bit (or more) and came back and worked their asses off until retirement, and many kept working into their 80s. They actually need their social security and medical benefits because they were poor white trash and never made much money, or saved much. I just think there should be means testing. I don't begrudge people what they have earned, but the wealthy don't belong on the dole.

Apparently you and a couple of others misunderstood what I meant by "sleazy."

Hey, we can have that all come back again - drop the Enron, Worldcom, GE, etc. etc. etc. yadda yadda blah blah investigations, tell investors to pour money into dotcoms because in the new economy it doesn't matter if you make a profit or even have a product, and we can all ride that little bubble again.

IIRC, it was Warren G Harding who was ****ing one of his secretaries and his wife caught on and went after him with a butcher knife while the secretary was hiding in a coat closet and Marines and Secret Service were trying to calm Mrs Harding and make sure the President stayed unstabbed. His wife was considered by some to be a suspect in his rather quick and mysterious death of apparent food poisoning.
Then we have Grover Cleveland, who fathered (or rather sperm-donored) two kids out of wedlock when he occupied the white house.
Then we have that little mini-crisis back when Indian murderin' Andy Jackson was pres, and the question came up as to whether it would be a constitutional issue for the Secreatry of War (in line of succession to the Presidency) to duel a sitting President for ****ing his wife.
So Clinton neither initiated sleaze in the white house, or brought it up to record levels.

Good, but unsustainable when it's driven by a bubble of fraud and bullshit and investor gullibility.
