It's the seed number for random maps. If you know a number that makes a random map, then you can just enter it every time. You can also try random words, and through some algorithm they will be turned into seed numbers.

Oh, ok, like Imperialism! But how do you know what seed to use? Is there a "trick" to it?

After you do a non-Conquest SP game (no PBEM, MP, etc.) then if you go back out to the main menu there should be a "play last world" option which contains the seed number of the last game you played.

"non-Conquest?"
What's the fun in using the seed if you can't use it in Conquest????

Because the "conquests" in Conquests already have set maps. "Epic games" in Conquest qualify as "non-conquest" single-player games.

I have not used it, but I see it as very handy. You see a game posted and they don't have the 4000BC start, they can give you the seed number and you can play the map.
I was thinking it could be used to play the map again with a differnt civ to see how they would do.

Its fun, makes it random.
Would be great to say, for instance, that the asleepathewheel map is highly recommended (its not , though haven't thouroughly looked at it) and easy for comparison games, such as, try seed blah blah, verses having to email around a map.

I think if you go to the .ini file in the Conquests directory it tells you the seed for the last map you played on.

I have tried the seed "YUMBO!" (w/o the quotes). I started in a swampy area. I tried the same again and started in a different start location, even though I used the same civ. So the map and (I believe) the start locations remain the same, but where YOU start is randomized among them.

Why is that not good? I would have thought it would be fantastic to try again on the same map, with slightly different strategies due to the different start positions, and that it was pretty much like reloading after playing forward a few hundred turns if you just started in the same place.

Clarification on my previous post:
When I repeated the YUMBO! map, I re-entered the seed; I did not select "Play Last World." I do not know if Play Last World gives the same starting position or not.
