artificer, pre3.5 needed several levels of rogue as well as several levels of mage
the trickster is a sort of combination rogue/wizard
and probably is not doing it for the same reasons as your mages
I always thought those two classes went together, in Baldur's gate my character is an elf rogue/wizard
an artificer can craft items that can be used for spell effects (levels 0 - 4) for cheaper than another caster (no xp cost for one), also has a med increase BAB (and gets items for free every 2 levels)
the only thing I notice bad about multiclassing a wizard is that yuor familiar doesn't get better, other than that it seems to be benificial to multiclass to at least another wizard class (I guess if you want to remain a generalist yuo should remain wizard)

I fail to see how Sorceror and Wizard have changed in 3.5?

Wizards get better feats.
Its your character anyway Jon. I just always prefer either pure class characters or fighter/rogues.
As a DM I'd disallow prestige classes anyway. Or make you actually go to Gond or wherever to meet the right people and have your ship sink.

Like I said, as a DM, I'd make you get all the requirements in-game. Then a prestige class has a certain amout of prestige attached.

I think Archmage is a sucky prestige class, the costs are high and the returns aren't so good. Mythic theurge is much better IMO. But since you don't need clerical spells, wizard is fine.

Archmage is a prestige class that makes DMs go mad. Perfect for breaking a well designed module.
(especially elemental mastery)
Pah, PrClasses are for powergamers anyway

Some of those powers are gross, but IIRC, you have to take them in order. Overall, it's not worth it.

I don't think you have to take them in order
I think that you can take any you wish

High Arcana: An archmage gains the opportunity to select a special ability from among those described below by permanently eliminating one existing spell slot
|
So they take "casting a spell as innate ability" and "elemental mastery" and make DM's hit heads on walls in frustration.
Ah, a fire elemental has grappled me (for example) but I have Sunfire I could cast as an innate abilty... change it to do cold damage...

You have to be a powerful mage before you can even THINK of becoming an archmage. The PrC is just extra cheeze on the cheezecake.
(bear in mind my IDEAL character at the moment is a Fighter4/Rogue5)

I am not sure trading off 9th level spells for some of these are worthwhile.

there is only one that you trade off a 9th level spell for
the others you trade off 5th-8th level

Even 8th level spells are mighty enough...

mastery of elements is the only one that takes an 8th level spell slot
and you can see how powerful that would be

It limits your versatility, though. I'd say it's a toss-up.
