What's your favorite special unit?
My favorite so far is the Conquistador (and his little doggy!)
When I came up against these I feared them. So I took Spain as my next civ

The Rider was my fav for a long time. Comes at a good point in the game and the extra move is so strong.

I normally want use the unit to trigger my golden age and trigger it in a time, when I have the most benefit from it. That's by far the late ancient/early medieval age, when I have to build a lot of the relatively expensive marketplaces, libraries, and aqueducts as well as to prebuild a few wonders (no caravan stockpiling here ). So a unit useful in the late ancient (Hoplite, Immortal, Legionary, Mounted Warrior) or early medieval age (Swiss Mercenary, Knight-level units) will suit me the best. But I do not have an all time favorite.

Ottoman Sipahi is the most powerful IMHO. At a time when the world is defended by nothing better than muskets in cities or towns, the Sipahi is overpowering.

I think mine would have to be the Samurai and the War Elephant, the former for both usefulness and graphical coolness, the latter simply for graphical coolness. I wonder if anyone has modded them to look like LotR oliphaunts...
Oh yeah, and Javelin Throwers are just awesome because you don't have to worry about not having enough workers.

I wonder if the Cossack is better than the Siphai now that it has blitz ability. It can cut down alot of the defenders army in the open field of battle failry quickly. Multiple attacks generate alot of elites and multiple attacks also increase your chance of MGLs by leaps and bounds.
Wow. I need to go play the Russians now.

Mounted Warriors
Riders
Samurai
War Chariots
Immortals
Legionaries
Not necessarily in that order.
-Arrian
edit: oh, yeah, the Gallic Swordsman too.

Der Panzerwagen! Ok, they come late, but stacking them into an army, gives you a movement of 4. That makes them really useful for fastattacks even threatning cities well-placed from the border.
The siphais are also high on my list, depending on what kind of game I want

Legions for being the most stalwart
Samurai for overall coolness and utility
Berserks for being the most devastating
Dromon for being versatile and a wild graphic

I love 'em all. But...
Dromons - for versatility.
Riders - for power.
Gallic Warrior - for terror factor.
Musketeers - for sheer cool factor.

Dromon - for versatility and cool factor
Enkidu Warrior - allows me to survive at higher difficulty levels
Berserks - amphibious war in the Early Middle Ages - and a decent attacker even without sticking them on a ship

Sir Ralph expressed my thoughts more clearly than I could. I also have an affection for the berserker. Being able to use seaborne assaults with that nice attack rating...it's so awesome.

To me, "favorite" does not equal "ones I think are most powerful" (else I would mention Immortals, which I find rather boring). Going with that:
1. Samurai. Just plain cool.
2. Jaguar Warrior, before the nerf for MP. Early-game madness.
3. Dromon. I fell in love the first time I saw that Greek fire animation.

Anything with extra movement especially panzers, although I don't usually get that far into a game.
Regular tanks are just too easy to counter, the TOW infantry makes quick work of 'em.
Favorite and most used, would be ..... riders, sipahi, gaellic warriors or jaguar warriors.
Problem with jaguar warriors is that ultra early warfare totally undermines all strategic decisions due to the extreme randomness of battles especially in that era.

Favorite?? I suppose that would be whichever I'm playing at the time.
I haven't played all of the civs, but have played against them all. The War Elephant has a scary sound that accompanies it as does the Dromon.
I do enjoy the Fortify motion as well as the battle animation of the Samurai.
