I'm at work right now, but I think the only Round 2 game remaining is Curumbor and Nappy?
Meanwhile, concerning the fate of cities left when a player concedes: I suppose letting them go AI is the best solution. At least it delays and minimizes AI influence.
Would anyone go for the idea of the remaining players taking turns claiming cities until all are gone? The conceding player would then gift them in one single turn.

Except that you can't gift the capital.
I suppose Markus' idea of setting "destroy civ on retirement" may be the best after all.

Then let the capital go AI. Someone will be sure to kill it quickly.
So, the choices:
1. Let the Civ go AI on retirement of the player.
2. Host "kill civ on retirement" of the player.
3. Divvy up cities upon retirement and let the capital go AI.
Vote early and often! *s*

I vote kill civ on retirement.
Too many complications if it goes to AI. This is after all a no AI game. Hopefully no one will conceed easily. I will stick it out beyond futile myself should it come to that.

>pokes head in again<
as Markus mentioned there is an option to "kill civ upon retirement" in the "select multiplayer features" screen.
With this option enabled,if someone decides they've had enough they just RETIRE in mid game and "poof".All their cities are gone and now the land can be settled again.
DON'T retire unless the game is saved or you are conceding.

Yeah, we're going to have set traps, methinks.
I vote to set the option to Destroy. Much easier and simpler.

Smash and Marcus - Thanks for the idea. I had thought it was something that required more intrusion by the host (possibly making other players uncomfortable about what was revealed). I see now that it is merely a setting at the start of play (and a default setting, no less).
I recommend that we go with the "kill civ on retirement" option, for simplicity and consistency.
It's still up to the players' consensus, though.

ROUND 3 MAPS -
I have a set of 4 fine maps for the Round 3 MP games. They are just like computer-generated maps, except the starting positions are set and are relatively even. No civ starts with a particular advantage or disadvantage.
They are not deliberately either hard or easy; that wasn't the point of making the maps. They are just "normal".
Any civ can be chosen.

A thought, which might get too complicated, I don't know. Players list their preferred gaming times?
I know that Deity and I are relatively flexible in that we both work from home and that we can both be available in our (Oz) daytime as well as most (Oz) nights. He has a couple of restrictions on (Oz) days.
Anyway, for what it's worth, my only definite restrictions, subject to everyone turning up, are - in US terms - Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights from approx 9pm US East Coast onwards.

PLANNING ROUND 3 GROUPINGS -
My primary goal is to keep the highest-scoring (within this tourney) players in direct competition, so I want to try and have all the undefeated players in the same group/game.
However, I also recognize that scheduling may be a problem. Is it best to try and keep the time zones together as much as possible, or should I try to group by available playing times?
In other words, 2 players in the same time zone might have very different schedules (one a night owl, and the other a day player). Or should I just group by score and hope you folks can work it out. Keep in mind that one of the advantages of this tourney is that you get to play top players whom you normally wouldn't meet up with...
Maximum players per game is 4.
Scheduling the MP games is really where the fewmets hit the windmill!

They apply a broad definition to the term work.

Absolutely right. While others toddle off to an office or wherever each day ... we don't. And we work - by any definition of the word - our own hours.
Sigh ... Could life get any better?

Current scores -
Markus, Jedi, and Aritea are undefeated. The winner of the Curumbor/Nappy duel will join that elite group of 8 points each. Hopefully, they can all play each other in Round3.
Alexander, Crustacian, Deity, Mark E, Smartfart, Carnide, and the loser of the Curumbor/Nappy duel will be in the second tier at 4 points each. They will be divided into 2 games.
Empress, Cap, and finbar have had difficult times and are at 0 points. However, they will (I hope) be able to play each other in the first MP round. In that Round, everyone gets at least a point.
Since one of them will be undefeated, I need the results of the Curumbor/Nappy duel before we can set up the next round...

I vote for Round 3 for just grouping players by score and making them figger it out on their own. After all, everyone in this tourney is online regularly and a dedicated player; scheduling shouldn't be overly difficult.

Update: Nappy and Curumbor are locked in a hard-fought duel. I fully expected this, and (indeed) hoped that there would be a few such games.
The outcome is important to the Round 3 MP games, as one of these fine players will be among the undefeated.
The other undefeated players are Aritea, Jedi, and Markus. Joining them will be either Nappy or Curumbor. I suggest you gentlemen should start considering possible playing times, accounting for either Nappy or Curumbor being in your group.

Post number 84 in the Round 3 thread, and Round 3 hasn't even begun yet...
Um, anyway, where was I? Oh yes... ah, well, it seems that Nappy has won our duel. In the year 1796 I conceded to him after he captured my Mini Science city (had Gardens, Colossus, & Copernicus). Also, his control of such key wonders as Statue, Leo's, Magellan's, and Mike's could not be counterbalanced by my Sun Tzu's, Adam Smith's, Lighthouse, and Bach's.
This was the longest Civ game I'd ever played, duel or otherwise, and it was close and hard fought the whole way. (When we retired we were both well beyond the top limit on the powergraph.) So congratulations to Nappy! We hope to play again--as he remarked at the end of the game, we have very similar playing styles.
Let Round 3 begin! (Oh wait, I guess I should let you say that, Cavebear.)

It is with great joy I announce that Round 3 is ready to start! There are 3 score brackets at the moment, and they have been divided into 4 games. Four players are undefeated at 8 points, seven players have 4 points, and three players have not yet scored. The group of 7 has been divided into two games (of 4 and 3).
Regardless of the number of players, the winner will get 4 points, 2nd 3 points, 3rd 2 points, and (if a) 4th 1 point. After this game, the scores will be all over the map!
Game 1 - Aritea (host), Jedi, Markus, Nappy
Game 2 - Alexander's Horse, Curumbor (host), Crustacian, Mark Everson
Game 3 - Carnide (host), Deity, SmartFart
Game 4 - CapTVK, Empress, Finbar (host)
I am at work now, but happened to have the scorecards with me. However, I will have to email the maps to the hosts when I get home ( and the settings to everyone.
If there are any hosting or scheduling problems in a particular game, please let me know at once (before the other games get underway).

Emails have now been sent out to all players, and maps sent to the hosts. If you don't recieve it/them (as appropriate), please let me know at cavebear@erols.com
When things get under way, I will start a new thread for Round 3. Meanwhile, post here with questions or problems...
