I don't think dates are carried over to the next installment since it would be too hard to know what dates have been used or not.

Well, as you may have noted I'm somewhat new to this myself. But they do not appear to 'carry over', and therefore no need of a catalog of previous choices, other than to recall the last thread where everyone voted.

I wonder how many times this question has to be asked before it gains it's spot in the FAQ.

No way. I don't want to be the last to fall in this trap.
But, if it does get added, then I think Solver's response in this thread is a good place to start.

You also can't give a date that's already taken

If the date is taken take the nearest availlable date.

Feb 22nd btw.
Monk the 19th January is very close, and this thread will remain active for 7-10 days. I doubt a bet so early is a good one, since if anyone starts a thread about post stats with another named 'post stats' on the first page I'm liable to be a little suspicious.
However there was one time Ming told me about where he deleted a thread because it was only a couple of days after the previous thread.

Nahhhh.... the FAQ is up to the owners... but don't worry, it's usually a LONG time between updates

What the hell... I kind of have to keep track of the thread anyway... I might as well vote.
But yes, don't make any real short term guesses, because I do delete new threads if this thread is still on the first page, and then I send a PM to the person that started the thread directing them to read the one still on the first page.

Good Doctor,
So, what you are saying is that people will keep posting to this thread for 7-10 days so it will still be in plain sight on Jan 19, right?? Therefore, nobody will post that soon. But, I got a message from God about that date so it MUST mean that Jan 19 will be the next time someone thinks the question.
But Feb 9 also came to me so I'll take that date instead, if that's okay.

I usually wait for the thread to drop "naturally", ie., the date picking usually ends pretty quick as the spammers... I mean members see that the subject has been raised again. I will however not stand for *bumps* that are solely meant to keep it on the first page. So get those picks in early... it does mean more open dates to pick from

Monk: Yeah that's a more reasonable bet. It never ceases to surprise me how soon it can come up again. Once we had one days after the voting finished, and it was genuine.
And yeah, bumps suck. Usually I remember to ask for the thread to be closed after the voting has died down, but one time I forgot and Skywalker ( ) bumped it.

Perhaps there should be a "traditional" time to pick dates, say 72 hours then the thread is closed?

However... as the chief minion of the great lords, I do get to voice my "opinion" to the good Doctor on whether it should be considered genuine or not

Hehe, but moderating this bunch makes you even more suspicious than me.
I bet you still don't believe Rasputin's (the one before Theben's on the list above - Gramphos won I think) was genuine.

DrSpike,
Thanks for repeating that lonnnng list of links. This is hillarious; but very strange. A Reader's Digest of each link would be helpful. I started at the bottom of the list to get the flavor of the beginning.
If I understand correctly, MarkG announces a sociology experiment, which has the same effect as LSD in the punchbowl, making everyone go crazy in multiple directions, until rah makes the following observation at page 9 of 13:
"Mark,
If these stats are left in the profile section only, within two weeks they will be forgotten and ignored by all the regulars. All we'll see is an occasional thread in the OT by a newbie asking what the heck they are, and the regulars will routinely answer for the post count."
which pretty much nailed this phenomenon... I think.
The rest seems to be repetition, but I can't seem to get past the strange "must read" quality of it all; so, I'll probably read the rest too.
