Notice how he state we should strive to be unilateral- strive does not mean all the time, it means we should make it the regular tool- in 1995 he felt that was no longer an option (remembering the war begun in '91, and was a hot topic all of 93 and 94) after years of deliberating action. Compare that with Iraq and Bush's drive for multilateralism (all 4 months of it...).
Of course, that annalysis does not fit into a coy soundbite, so it will fall by the wayside.

Gephardt gave a speach today in Iowa noting all the inconsistencies between Dean's former positions and his current positions and accused him of at least being insincere.
It was the best speech I have ever heard Gephardt make. He does have some passion down there and is not completely boring.
|
Saw it too: yup, he had passion al right. Of course, if gephartd does not get number one, he is sunk, cause he is about to run out of money.

When Kerry was the front runner the press was not half as negative- of course, that was before things heated up but still.

I am enjoying the fact that all media eyes have been on Iowa.
January 19 is just a few days away now.

Well, Kerry has the lead in Iowa now. Any day, Clark could have the lead in NH. If Dean doesn't win either, and then doesn't win at least half of the states on Feb 3rd, he will drop out.

What other candidate is facing the scrutiny of Dean? If the media had been this tough on Busgh in '99, where do you think he'd be today? If the media were this tough on the other Dem candidates, how would they look?
Anyway, I'm sure many of you have the exact same views you had nine years ago.
Say Fun, since you are so good at regurgitating RNC talking points, why not end the pretence and form a branch of the Log Cabin Republicans.

MrFun isn't a Republican, he's just spineless, and since traditionally the GOP is more tenacious at browbeating its opponents, naturally it will have more effect.

I think all the candidates should face the same level of scrutiny. If only one is getting tough scrutiny, then in effect, it's a media endoresment of the others.

There are two parts of that sentence, one untrue, one true. The two parties are not opposites. In fact, on most funidmental issues they pretty close. It's not for no reason that most other industrialized countries describe the U.S. as having two conservative parties. The American eagle is a strange bird having two right wings.

Now, if I were to go back over all your posts on every subject over the past 3 years or so and quote all the times you backpedalled or contradicted things you've said lately, would that mean: A) you're a rampant backpedaller with honesty problems, or B) I was going to unreasonable ends to dredge up fodder to make broad accusations about your integrity?
The answer is B, and if you weren't swayed by the media winds that blew you in any direction, you'd see that Dean is being subjected to a rather intense degree of scrutiny, moreso than the other candidates, precisely because he is the frontrunner.

As Che and Boris have said, it seems to me the press is going over every single statement Dean has ever made- I mean, that "news" that he once said special interest ruled the Iowa caucus? Wow-they do: special inetrests control everything, becuase everyone has their own special interests....
As Boris said: so you are the front runner- OK, but every candidate is in theory the same- why not give all of them the same level of scrutiny? After all, should not all their record be similarly exposed?

That's just it. We don't exist in a realm of theory and every candidate isn't the same. The media isn't going to wate thier time giving extensive coverage to the Sharpton or the Libertarian campaign precisely because of that fact. If Dean can not stand the glare that is inevitable from being the front runner, then he should never have thrown his hat in the ring because it will only get worse when the GOP comes calling if he wins the nomination of the Dems.

As DD illustrates, there is also the propaganda that "Dean can't stand the glare"...
Dean said he was going to start attacking again... but instead of just Bush, he said he was going to lash out at those using him as a pincushion.
The dopey right wing pundits would have you believe Dean was crying about the attacks... it's a shame that people distort the truth. but hey, without that, the right wing in America wouldn't have as much power as they do.

That's the Catch-22 for Dean. If he doesn't respond, he's a Dukakisesque wimp who bends over and takes it. When he does respond, he's painted by some as "whining" about being attacked. Which is it?
