Sort like club. You can tell as they have icons that will show up under the avatar. I am not sure if all of them have icons, but most do for sure.

I always think of them as a badge that shows the part of apolyton that you consider you belong to.
Or notches on the bedpost, for those that are that way inclined.

well, some are required to access private forums, like the PTWDG or ISDG or C3CISDG etc.

EDIT: So does this mean it is both a symbol of belonging and a member's pass?

1. Symbol of belonging: Sure. I guess you can call it that.
2. A Member's pass: No. Joining a certain group doesn't automatically give one access to the private forum. The forum Moderator has to allow you access. However, not all civgroups have private forums.

There are private forums now, requiring a special permission to enter?
Why does everything that humans get involved in have to end up in hierarchies, "we vs them", "elite vs mob" etc.?
A sad development indeed...

You won't get the symbol unil you are authorised either. (There once were a bug that made it so, which made some people have all symbols while they actuually weren't members in all the groups)

Private Forum
You get vertical integration, keeping everything onsite, plus safer surfing by avoiding ICQ or one of the Instant Message deals, plus the cache of a private club.
What could be wrong with this??

private forums are so the diplomacy guys can spam more without being seen
but seriously, civ groups does all ow easier identification of the games people play or have played so can make it easier to see some one to ask a question of ..
perhpas we need an icon for all the OT people !!!!

No, not an OT civgroup. It would have too many members. And it wouldn't benefit anything.

And since when is it a problem if a civgroup has "too many members"? Are there any hard limits?

Don't sugar-coat it, Gramphos. Tell us what you really think of the OTers.

And then hordes of OTers would then invade all the on-topic forums and post stuff that was almost on-topic. Yeah, that was real great.
And this is my view-point from when I was an on-topic only person.

Well, I relly have nothing against the OTers just as long as the load isn't very high. I've actually myself made some posts in the OT, but not very often.
However, posting in the OT feels like a waste of time in most occations.
