Mahler
Best stuff on earth. You;ll never encounter anyone as capable of encompassing the grand sweep of human emotion and experience in music.
Listen. Learn. Love. Dear lord...

So it´s not Brahms anymore?
What do you recommend from Mahler for an amateur in classic music like me?

Brahms is still great, no doubt.
Mahler? Start with the 1st, of course.
But the 6th is his dark masterpiece. Shattering.

The 6th is phenomenal. The finale is simply a brilliant work...utterly gut-wrenching catastrophe. The three hammer blows should send anyone cowering. If this one doesn' t move you, you're hopeless.

The classical section at the K-mart here is sadly lacking.
Even sadder is the fact that K-mart is the best place in this town to buy music...

So, is this like the Miami Mahler in that American Wrestling Federation?
Or is it the lead singer of Brit 80s horrorfest boyband, LiMahler?
Or the Turkish version, KeMahler Ataturk?
Or the Afghani one, Babrak KeMahler ?
Or the Russian drink, Mahlertov Cocktail ?
Is it the Filipino state residency, the Mahlercanang Palace?
Or the victory of Marlborough over the French, Mahlerplaquet?

I might be tempted to follow up with really cheesy Brahms puns, but the slushy romantic slop he came out with is punishment enough.

Probably the only point of agreement I've ever had with Boris.

Meh. Considering your professed preferences for clothing styles, grooming products and music, I'm comfortable enough with your extremely bad taste to not put much stock in it.
And even Brahms haters wouldn't refer to it as "slushy romantic slop." I mean, we're talking Brahms here, who's the picture of classical austerity and structural rigor.

Who do you have playing 1 and 6 Boris?
edit: Mahler is probably my favourite composer. I've lost count of how many Mahler CDs I have.
I think I have everything but Das Klagende Lied and some of them I have 4 or more versions of.
If anyone wants to recommend good performances, please do.

One of my favourite Mahler records is the 2nd symphony conducted by Gilbert Kaplan.
It's not the best of the best, but it puts to shame many other recordings, which is surprising as Kaplan is not a professional conductor.
In fact, he's a rich Mahler fan who could afford to hire an orchestra and a conductor to teach him how to conduct the 2nd Symphony. As I said, it shames the recordings of most professional conductors and reminds me that there's hope for us all.

Remind me of what those allegedly are meant to be, oh gay man who can't iron.... or get cafetiere coffee right.
I mean, if you can't iron, honeychile, I'm thinking Brown Bottle the Bag Lady's fashion sense might seem positively Nouvelle Vague in comparison with yours- or are you saying you wear Yohji Yamamoto and Hussein Chalayan unstructured clothing?
