I recently got conquest and had to ask the same questions. Conquest is a add on for Civ3 so you need civ 3 BUT it comes with PTW so you dont need to but that. And yes you should get it in my opinion. But you mayt want to get CIV3 first to see if you like it!

Unless you're cash-strapped and have to make a "one or the other" choice then I'd get the original CD and Conquests at the same time. Conquests adds so much to the game, and as long as you patch it, it's fairly stable. Conquests still only costs $10 at Amazon so it's not that large an invesment for the return you'll receive.

I got civ 3 when it first came out and was so discusted that I sold it the next day, but It seems to have come along way with theese 2 new expansions ...
Could someone point out maybe 3 big differences with civ3-conquests compared to civ3?
Sid Meier makes the best games really, I ijust hope they dont do the same mistake with Pirates as they did with civ3 ....gameplay should have higher priority then graphics imo.....

Some improvements to the interface and some limited group movement.
Improved AI.
New units and Civs.
MP (ok this is not the best, but workable)
Editor is vastly improved.
Demonstrated support.

Well if you like the other games on this website then yes, you should try it out. Depends on what you are looking for in a game, really.

Buy it but you'll have a hard time deciding which patch to download for it. I opted for 1.12, although there are several in circulation in various places.

One of my favorite additions with PtW and C3C is the stack movement command. Saves a lot of time.

I have no idea why the concept of stacked movement wasnt in the original. If I knew how to program the game I would add alot of things but I dont so I cant

I would say the opposite. If you like the other games on this site, stay clear of civ3. It's a let down after the likes of SMAC and Civ2.

You have time constraints and budgets to live with. This means you have to stop adding things or never get the project done and out the door.

Besides, if they added everything into the original they couldn't milk us for more money with expansions.

I would of liked to see a option where you could lets say select all availible units of a certain kind (like tanks) and move them all to a particular spot with one command.

You also have way points. I have not tried them, but could be used to corral units.

player1, do you know where I can view a comprehensive hot-key listing? I especially would like to know what the move the whole stack one is.
Many Thanks!

If you right click on the unit when it's in the stack, 'move units of same type' is one of the options.

Oops, how about an entire stack of 'mixed units'?

Antrine, simply press 'J' for that. CTRL-J for a specific unit type, and the J for all units within a tile. Extremely useful and I couldn't live without those commands.

Sorry, I gave you a bum steer! There's a button in the Right hand corner that does that. I got it mixed up with the City menu (which I find handy).

I meant if you like RTS games - as all others on this site are, with the special exception of RoN. Civ3 has a different feel to it than Civ and Civ2 did, and for many people (like Osweld as an obvious example), as it did not become the type of game that Alpha Centauri was, was a disappointment to them. If you like SMAC you might dislike Civ3, but that's no given. I loved SMAC to bits, but haven't played it at all since Civ3 came out.

It's playable. I know PtW wasn't great at first but the patches seemed to help. I don't have C3C yet so I couldn't tell ya how that is. A lot of people I know do PBEM and that seems to work just fine.

If it was just Civ3 then I'd say maybe not. I actually did play SMAC after Civ3.
But with Conquests out, I have to say buy it! Just running through the conquest scenarios alone is worth it. Not only are they interesting challenges in their own right but it gives you an idea as to the wide flexibility of the editor. I don't do anything with it myself (time constraints - too busy playing ) but I am sure that some of the people here will produce really interesting stuff with it (since they have in the past).
The scenarios are what made it worth it for me. I started at the beginning and am working through to the end in order.
