Disliking -- even hating -- a particular aspect of America doesn't mean one hates the entire thing. For every one thing I hate about this country, I can think of ten things I love about it, and I'm sure most fellow liberals (and conservatives!) feel the same way.

I can't speak for Americans but at all the protests I've been on, all the people I've spoken to had a good understanding of the issues in question and a strong sense of their own views. And I can normally tell sheep from shepherds pretty well.

Why? If we are to succumb to common sense ("Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen" - Einstein), in all its subjectively short sighted glory, then you will become conservative PA style, or neocon. Not even all moral absolutists are that bad!

Most lefty Brits I could see here were not willing to trust the people to govern. I suppose elitism is especially strong among the British educated class.

Damn straight, in this culture of anti-intellectualism and a tinderbox of potential witch hunts, I take enormous pride in myself and admiration of others that break free of that, the constant abuse that I personally have received from the age of 4 to now, to become someone capable and willing of thoughts beyond the simple material concerns of my life. I consider the "educated classes" as a whole more capable than the "working classes" at government, economics and the understanding required to run a nation. It so happens that there are a higher frequency of liberals among the intellectual groups. I do not believe a lay person should have more say than someone familiar with the issues in question. Its a contextual thing. Who would you rather defend you in court... a lay bricklayer or a highly skilled lawyer? Thats not to say one is more intelligent than another, its to say that one has relevant skills. A philosopher would make a lame plumber, and I dare say both are equally needed for a good civilisation.

I love the American people, their humour, confidence and hospitality, making us Brits look dur and uninteresting. I don't hate their government though I have concerns with it and intellectual disagreement, I do not hate it. What I do hate is war. PA, you need to stop labeling people with your uninformed and oblique definitions, your emotive arguments that stand like a tower of feathers in the gale of critical analysis and see things from beyond the pale of your own peculiar brand of short sighted North-Western little englander mentality. Accusing anyone who disagrees with anything Bush does of America hating is one of the most ridiculous and annoying comments I ever hear. I don't hate the physical landmass that is America, nor the cities and buildings upon that land, or the people who live there. I don't hate their way of life or the way they are government and I really think that the basic ideas upon which the country was founded are a great concept for the way countries should be run. I don't hate George Bush or anyone in his government. I just don't agree with them.

A lot of us "lefties" just don't agree with some (most) of the current US government's policies. Why can't we do that? At home I oppose a large proportion of the policies of the party I voted for. When any party is in power it is the duty of people to have their say about policies they don't agree with.

Basically, I might argue that I don't like some of what Bush does but I'm not going to be flying a plane into a building in New York because I hate America.
