What is the "Texas" of your country?
Slowwwhand and George W. Bush's fame/infamy have given most of the world what kind of a place Texas is.
Now, does every country have such a place, and what are they like?

Finland is not part of a country -- it's a country unto itself.
But would there be a distinct cultural region within Finland? I would say so -- the Laaplands.

Not so -- it has become much more integrated in United States ever since NAFTA in the 1990s.

In Australia, Queensland, mainly thanks to someone who made a die hard Afrikaaner Broederbond member look like a gay Green senator:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joh_Bjelke-Petersen
Joh Bjelke Petersen- proof that dinosaurs survived.
They still have people who think that the best place for a Koori/Aboriginal is a jail cell- or Northern Territory.
In Great Britain, Yorkshire. The rest of Great Britain gets heartily nauseous at the likes of Geoffrey Boycott explaining just how wonderful Yorkshire is, how the best food comes from there, how they invented everything from breathing to quantum string theory. In a British saying, they're all mouth and trousers- or fur coat and no knickers.
William Hague, foetus ex-leader of the Tory Party was a Yorkshireman.
In Canada, my friends in B.C. regularly regale me with anecdotes about the square heads in 'texan' Alberta. On the other hand, it does have the Calgary Gay Rodeo.... and Asher, of course.

You did however allow an Austrian to come to power.

Alberta is probably closest to Texas as a whole, but still not really.

Bavaria of course. Arch-catholic and reactionary. But compared with Texans, Bavarians are ultra left commies, though.

You just have to know how to talk to them. They are really very nice people once you but a beer in their hand and take the shotgun out of the other.

It is difficult to find an equivalent to Textas in France...
Let's see, we are looking for an area that is:
- obnoxious
- wealthy
- believes it's a separate country
- fiercely conservative
I can't think of any French area that combines all 4 aspects. A good case could be made for Corsica or for the Marseilles region, but they aren't wealthy enough.
Another good point could be made for Alsace, but it's not obnoxious enough.
Finally, the Bretons are all this, but not conservative enough.
And although Paris scores extremely high on the obnoxious and wealthy attributes, it scores poorly on the two others.

Texas is more right wing than main stream US Wales is more left wing than the UK.
Texans fought for theie independence from a third country, Wales fought for theirs against the country they are now part of.
Texas is not culturaly diverse between the north and south of its territory int he same way Wales is.

Another vote for Alberta just so I can call Asher a Texan of Canada.
Wealthy, obnoxious, seperatist and conservative. Fits 'em to a tee.
