hmmm.... As a virtual native of Texas i can say that wealthy is DEFINATELY not a characteristic of Texas.
As for fiercely conservative? compared to the nation we probably lean a bit right, but Texas is a very diverse state. Its always the vocal extremes (ultra conservatives in this case) that are heard loudest
obnoxious? yes
believes its a seperate country... no. Texas is one of the more 'patriotic' states, which is just as bad in my opinion

hmmmmm, maybe Cholla?
Its got the obnoxious regionalism thing down cold, but it doesn't really have the conservative thing so much, I think that's more in the Busan area IIRC.

You mean as in being less economically developed, and/or having less of their nation's share of wealth/GDP??

Wealth is a state of mind here in Texas.........most of our Daddy's have the money
I will say that the "ole' boy" school of thought does reign supreme down here though.

I stand by Yorkshire- they are the English equivalent of the Scots who paint their faces blue and mark it with the saltire every time they're just about to lose at football to the United Arab Emirates' Ladies team (reserves), and brag 'Wha's like us?'.
They have pockets of wealth and pockets of poverty (rural and inner city).
They have a loud obnoxious accent (see reruns of 'All Creatures Great and Small').
In former times they could bore Olympic style about how Yorkshire was the U.K.'s biggest county, the West Riding, the South Riding......zzzzz....zzzzzz....
They have people who believe that by virtue of being born there, they are god's gift to the human race- Geoff Boycott, William Hague.
They have a superabundance of self-satisfaction and smugness.

I'd like to posit that USA is the Texas of the world.

I'm on a weekend leave. (That's the cue for a Finnish reserve old-time to start complaining how their every army weekend was spent slogging through three feet of snow with wolves coming after them.)
And not many Russians to kill, unless you count Corporal Ijäs.

anywhere outside the major cities, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, El Paso, Corpus Christi (actually most of the Gulf coast for that matter would not be considered Texas.... The Texas coastal region seems to have a lot in common with the Florida Gulf coastal region, actually) and a select few other towns and small cities. other words, out in the country would be considered 'texas' and in some uber-religious towns like San Angelo

Well, you know it was all in jest, except for the serious bits.
I have met some pleasant folks from Yorkshire- but then they didn't live there any more.

For Greece, it's Crete.
They speak funny.
They wear funny clothes.
They are savage and conservative.
They bear arms.
They are chauvinistic, edging on separatist.
They don't respect central government very much.

Mazarin: The Germans had more than one Austrian ruling them.
In Austria, it's either Carinthia or Tyrol.
Carinthia is "Haider-Country". They're a mainly slavic people but have a complex because of it and thus try to be more Germanic than the Germans...
Tyroleans call their own country the "holy land", arch-catholic and reactionary, they are essentially mountain bavarians. But like sir Ralph said, they're still pinko-commies compared to Texans.
