Actually it is quite a handy arrangement at the moment. I could afford to live out but this place is more comfortable for anything I'd get for the same money and my mother needs the money. Symbiosis, no?

Well there is that. Hell, I was moving out in November, all lined up, until that plan was 'scuppered'. But I do know that my sh*t does upset her too, but with the Novartis business and how they acted, she was upset when I was just livid. But as soon I have some sort of more stable position (a contract of fixed term), then I will get a place of my own, but in the meantime, if I lost my job and had to pay rent I would be in serious trouble...

You know one of the most important life skills is dealing with setbacks.
One person (i.e. with a loser mentality) says "oh well, that's ruined everything."
Another person (i.e. with a healthy attitude) says, "oh well, maybe that job wasn't right for me anyway. Another opportunity will come along".
It's all in how you look at things.

Same with everyone. You can lose your job no matter where you work or what kind of contract you have.

Not in Germany. We (still) have job security. That means however that noone would ever employ you unless during boom.

True! But at least you'll keep your job during the recession (if you ever get one!). What's the unemployment now..4 million? 11%? Why are left-wingers so economically illiterate..

It sounded like a good job but I wouldn't go near that place even if they doubled the wage...

I applied for a job with Pfizer one (Sandwich isn't it?) via an agency but they never replied...

All science sector jobs seem to be via agency nowadays on short term/ongoing contracts...why I will probably leave the sector at this rate.

I'm going to be looking for temporary jobs via agencies for a similar reason, the advantage with that is that I can decide whether I want to stay with the company I am lined up with. Look at the positives Rich.
It can be a bugger if you have to move to get the job though, but a temporary rent accomodation is worth it if you're looking for the right job.

Oh yeah, I am quite willing to move, that isn't a problem...but I am getting to a point where I would like a bit of security (not necessarily that much but certain reassurances from contract length to allow me to do certain things) so I can start to get on with life...

I am going for the senior analyst position which is at my current place of work. I dunno what the chances of me getting it are but it could be worth a try. I will be out of work by the end of February unless something comes up...

Yeah Stew, but you can say "I am a student for x time". Alas I do not have the luxury. I know that contracts can be terminated if the right conditions are fulfilled, but even so they do count for a certain amount of security...one day Stew you'll find out what I mean.

This thread is cool, lot's of good advice.
People are really all the same only the accents change, most people aren't prejudice but may be if you fully expect them to be..... If you act like your different to everyone else then they'll all treat you differently.

"If you act like your different to everyone else then they'll all treat you differently."
Explain how people act differently when they are across the room and you haven't interacted with them yet.
ie, talking loud or standing in front of the football while waiting for people to tell them what drink they want

Well some people will just judge you on visual appearance alone, it is a sad sign, but people make major judgements on people just by what they look like...
