Hit the F8 button and it will bring up a screen detailing the various win conditions and how far away from them you are.

Rhotaerill's advice is good, but only applies to C3C. If you have vanilla or PTW, the F8 screen won't tell you this info.
IIRC, you need either:
1) a single city with 20K culture points; OR
2) 100K total culture points AND at least twice as much as your nearest rival. (Thus, if your nearest adversary has at least 50K, you'll need more than 100K.)
I'm pretty sure these conditions apply to vanilla, PTW and C3C. I'm NOT sure if they only apply to standard map sizes. Anyone?

That is how it works in CivIII and PTW IIRC. In C3C for sure the total culture changes with the map size such that a large map is 130K.

Oops, I suppose I shouldn't just assume that everyone has C3C. Thanks for adding the rest of it.

Thanks- I don't have C3C, and I was initially wondering why I never noticed that F8 thing before :P.
Thanks to your help, I am now only 99.9 percent newb .
