Just a quick note, Strategy First (our publisher) indicate that the applications and acceptance for the Supreme Ruler 2010 Open Beta is still, well, "open"...
They've been approving applicants and still have a backlog of a few hundred to go through; however, "interested" testers are particularly desired, and so I thought this forum might be a particularly good source of such folks. (There ARE strategy game enthusiasts here, right? ) (Yes, that was a joke, before anyone attacks me!)
I think the signup page was already mentioned in this thread, but just to be sure, here is the link:
www.strategyfirst.com/beta
(Wouldn't hurt to also mention in your application that you're a member of the Apolyton forum.)

We've also had a few news updates on our own site:

Looks sweet, guys. It looks like the more indepth game in the style of Global conquest that I always wanted.
So will we have culture, and religion, as well? This can add a nice spin.

oh and another couple of notes/questions:
- don't get too obsessed about the graphics. They're fine.
- will this include the entire world as a single game?
- will it be easily moddable? ( VERY IMPORTANT ).
if you make it easily moddable, you'll be the greatest guys, ever. Just imagine, similar games, but in the ancient eras.

We do simulate some elements of culture and religion. For example, religion is used to determine 'compatibility' between regions in terms of co-operation, especially in cases of alliances, conquest and occupation. Australia and New Zealand, even Russian and Ukraine, would be relatively compatible; Israel occupying Egypt would likely not work all that well.
These factors tie in to our Civilian Approval and Civilian Loyalty models.
Regarding Mod-ability, we are definitely supporting the user MODs. All major elements (maps, equipment list, tech tree, etc) can be MOD'd. Due to the amount of data we simulate and the number of files and data-relationships involved, doing a 'full MOD' (ie a different era) would be a lot of work, but it is certainly possible. In general, though, Supreme Ruler 2010 is tuned towards the 'modern era', by that I mean WWI and onwards.
Most of the scenarios in SR2010 play as a Campaign system (start in a small region, work your way up), however a full 'world map' scenario will also be included for play on its own. It's a big map, though!

I'd recommend including an option to convert, and different socio-economical models, as well, though.

again, . You'd be amazed at what the folks here can do if they want to.

This is very good, and I can wait to see this. 'big map'? If this game ran on a PII-400, at one point, I think we'll do ok.

Looks interesting. Definately a game I'm going to watch.
Are there going to be BattleGoat units? Fear the goat!

I don't believe we are going to include actual battle-goats as a unit
However, in the list of 'politically incorrect' units we have already decided against:
- "Partisan Minesweepers" (no equipment required)
- The "Australian Rabid Dingo Pack"
- The "Combat Swimmer" (apparently a real occupation, it just sounded a bit too strange - as in "Captian, look out, a pack of Combat Swimmers are approaching!")
- The "Poutine Launcher" (considered a Weapon of Mass Destruction in Quebec)

i havent been following it, no. I just looked at your text. Oy, thats long for me, and without nekudot. It'll take a while for me even to make a garbled translation, and i may have to check the Lost in trans thread to get a better idea of what people are doing. Hope the thread isnt waiting for me.

Another preview of Supreme Ruler 2010 posted today...
From GameSpy:
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/supreme-rul.../505879p1.html
Not a very detailed preview, but a general overview. A few factual omissions in this one, for example:
- Multiplayer is fully functional in our Preview and Beta versions - we wanted to make sure that Multiplayer was implemented very early in the design cycle, so that it would be stable and reliable (as well as assisting us with ongoing play balancing).
- Cabinet/Advisors are more integrated than the preview implies - any department can be set to full 'cabinet control' to avoid micromanagement.

Yes, the Wargamer preview is a nice one, they've gone in to a bit more detail than most....
A direct link to the preview itself is:
http://www.wargamer.com/reviews/supreme_ruler_preview/
One of the quotes from this preview that I like:
Supreme Ruler 2010 has my nomination for "Most Ambitious Strategy Game of All Time".
As far as the release date, since the beginning of the year we've been reviewing development with our publisher, Strategy First, and the release date has been set to late 3rd Quarter 2004. In general we're aiming for a street date of early September, and we're hoping to have a "worldwide" release at the same time.
We've always said we won't release "until it's ready", however the current beta test version is extremely stable, Multiplayer has been working well, and other elements (finishing the Scenarios) are also on track. So it looks good for September.

Another preview of Supreme Ruler 2010 has been posted... a pretty good overview:
http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=17568
Has a bunch of good quotes, this is one of my favourites from the article:
