I have never even seen a Paratrooper (or Modern Paratrooper) so I don't know.

If you play the WWII Pacific Conquest as Commonwealth you'll see AI use Paratroops on the 1st turn.

I have not played any of them yet. I tend to wait for 2 years to pass before I do the scenarios.

I may have to start sooner with all the interesting things I have read.

The only AI Paratroopers that I've ever seen actually dropped was in one of my very first Civ3 pre any patch games. I think the AI also used a Helocopter in that one. I haven't seen either since.

I have seen some Paratroopers if the AI didn't have certain resources or tech to make better units, but it seems to mostly go for Marines.

In a Debug game I recently played, there were multiple occurances of paradrops. I do not know that they were "combat drops" though.

I've never seen the AI acquire Advanced Airflight or Amphious Warfare without moding the techs to make them required, let alone see them building marines or paratroopers.

In my last game, I had a city on an island, protected by Infantry and with a couple of Infantry units on the adjacent tiles to make landing impossible. The AI turned up with some Marines and took the city as I stared aghast. Looks like it can happen after all - and oh yes, I had never researched Amphibious Warfare myself.

In C3C you had better be ready for marines. They are nasty.
I had a big surprise in one game and came very close to losing a city with a 4 team calv army and an infantry unit. IIRC it was two lousy marines.
