I got 2 SGL and 1 MGL in my most recent epic game.
The 2 SGLs were both well after I had a clear tech lead. The first even had to wait fortified in my capital for me to reserach the first modern era tech so I'd have a wonder to use him with. (I chose SETI.) The other one I got with Fission and chose the UN.
The MGL was towards the very end of the war over Uranium and I just built an army with it and I used it to lead off an attack on one of the remaining cities.

I do wish it wasn't quite so sporadic. They can be a real momentum shifter do to their immense rarity sometimes.

I've had two of the buggers in a game before, but if you have a consistent tech lead you are probably going to get one sooner or later throughout the course of a game...

yeah - 8 civs on a huge map. I've been almost continuously at war the whole game. There are 11 turns left and I have about another 30 or 40 cities to take out for a clean sweep.
I got a bunch of MGL's immediately after capturing Sun Tsu. I got a big tech lead.

I've been unlucky with SGL. The people here who have been stealing mine have been noted.

Later as a rule, but it is hard to pull with some of the civs.
You get nailed by the early UU or a wonder trigger many times.

I try to get mine once I hit republic (or monarchy), but I'm not too pissed if I trigger it ancient via unit. In my current game I triggered it early industrial to build factories and wonders much faster. Good time, as stuff gets very expensive. Its good to time it so you're either building a lot of buildings or they are already in place to increase tax/sci revenue. But like I said, I don't really care anymore when it is, its entirely map dependent for me. If I'm on an island and have an ancient uu, i will probably hold it til middle ages. If I need the extra unit power, then I trigger it early and conquer as much as possible.

Best result to date:
Research Philosophy - get SGL
Free Tech Republic - second SGL
That was a fun turn

How's that possible? You get the free tech before you can move your science leader and use him? Or are you allowed to have more than one?

I just want to see a screenshot of an actual game with more than one SGL in existence. I still haven't seen it myself but it would be nice to know for absolute sure that it can happen and isn't just a trick on someone's memory.

i've gotten "streaks" of them before, they totally tip the scales.
i got one in a PBEM with ayronis, rushed the Temple of Artemis, and my culture jumped through the roof.
not only that, but claiming borders onl a few turns after founding a city is HUGE.

I have had two at once.
Got the first with Philosophy. Hear I could have more than one so I saved him. Got Republic with my free tech, then researched Lit on my own. Got my second with that one. I said what the heck and rushed the Pryamids and the Great Library that turn.

No such luck here, but I've just recently taken up golf and am pleased to report that I managed 7 holes-in-one in my recent round to shoot a 43 for 18 holes; some dedicated practice and a few more aces each round and I'll be able to challenge Dear Leader Kim out on the links.
