Oh man....I'm a Believer!!!!!
After playing SMAC for all these years and viewing the "Hall of Fame" a realization came to me....I have never (not once) beat the game as a Believer....heck, I never even played the Believers before.
Well, after beating the game with Lal (yes, I was trying to beat the game with every faction) I decided I would try my hand at being a Believer (blegh). Since I never played them before, I decided I would put the difficulty at Librarian (I'm not a 'Transcendent' person yet).
When I began, I was pretty pissed off because it was taking forever to get the tech I needed, so I just pumped out colony pods......then, when I got the tech, I switched to Fundy (which made it take even LONGER to get tech).
The first faction I met was, get this, Yang of all people. Immediately he tells me what I was expecting, "Planet is too big for the both of us" and we go into Vendetta. He has missile tech while I'm stuck using lasers. After finally overwhelming Manufacturing Warrens with a 15:1 ratio (yes, I DID use that much) I began my "crusade" and wiped out the Hive .
This spread to the other factions and I beat the game yesterday......so, what's my point? My point is that despite Miriams obviously inferior ideology to my hero, Chairman Yang, Sister Miriam and the Believers are (in their own way) a fun faction to play.....despite the research penalty.
(will I play the Believers again? Probably not for a while....I'm going to have to go back to the Hive and wash that filth off of me).

Don't you know how to play with them? Here's the key:
- Democratic/Free Market/Wealth + Punishment sphere in each base
Playing this way, you'll get rich and will be able to fight as much as you want. You may be behind in tech... That's not a problem, just buy them! The enemy completes all SP? Not a problem, capture them.
That's the way you should play with the Believers

I've never played with them before. I kept switching from Democratic to Fundamental. (I was trying to play how Miriam is "supposed" to be played).
I was running Green because I was tired of the twenty-five hundred mindworms attacking my bases every damn turn.
And I figured I could run Wealth because it would help me out with the creds.

I prefer Fundy/FM/wealth for the good sister. Punishment sphere and immunity to probing. Wealth hit to morale is offset by Fundy such that elites can still be built.
Key tho' to Miriam is probe/probe/probe. All she needs is near tech parity.

I'm trying to play a Miriam builder on a large map of planet. I've just conquered the Hive and Diedre, both are now submissives. I immediately sold a bunch of tech (25 energy) to the Hive, he was one year away from a breakthrough, and I got Fusion power. arty: I'm working on Clean Reactors myslef. I will probably take out Santiago as soon as I convince her to declare war.
I put in both Aliens to make it tough. I lost the University to H'mnee (comm blackout ), and am at war with it. Marr is on the North Island and I'm leaving it alone for now. H'mnee was going to be tough, but it still doesn't have air power, and now I have Fusion and Air Power. The problem is a two front war, and shifting my forces from the Hive front back to H'mnee. Should be over in 20-30 years, is 2212 if I remember. Can't afford to run Free Market, I'd been running Green to keep the eco damage down, and I cannot afford to lose police garrisons yet. I just started pop booming with Democratic/Planned, eco damage is up but not too much. Soon as I get Orbital Spaceflight and can get enough sats up I'll go Free Market with heavy specialist usage.
