Greatest action game ever
What! No Max Payne 2 thread! Has no one played this game? Or nobody liked it (impossible)?

Doom. The level-design was superb.

Max Payne 2 was adequate, but sooooo short. I admit to hating the awful comic book story, so maybe I am biased. I liked the first game until I realised it was not a joke.
Max Payne is a good console style game. I expect more from a great PC action game, like System Shock 2 or Deus Ex (1!)

I hated it at first in MP1, but it gives it a special glance.

SS2 or DE1 are action games but with RPG elements - to much RPG elements to be a true action game.

I got this for X-mas from the cowgirl, but my comp was not up to snuff. Just got the new one built and played a few hours on Sat. So far the graphics are sweet (or maybe it is just the new system) and the gameplay reminds me of the old MP, I'll be playing a few more levels today for sure...since I'm at home sick and everything!
I loved the facial expressions on Max (had to be a cutscene). First shooter that I've played where the cutscenes look like they were rendered with the game engine. I almost forget that I'm in a cutscene and find myself mashing keys and trying to shoot.

Obstructor: They are action games that also have depth for free. But if you insist, Half Life has no RPG elements, and that's better than MP2 even though it's old.

Hehe, I know lots like MP2.
For me though it's part of a nasty trend towards pretty games whose substance is lacking, and whose plot would only satisfy 14 year old console gamers.
But then I'm fussy.

SSII is fantastic. Max Payne I was very good, but haven't tried 2. Unreal series are great, as are Quake and Doom, especially for their time. Haven't tried Dues Ex, though I'd love to.

SS2 as in System Shock 2 or Serious Sam 2?
Doesn't matter, both are kickass games

"Greatest action game ever" and "Max Payne" doesn't fit into one thread...
Ok, I must admit, I've never tried Max Payne 2, but I never finished the first game. Reason: Part boredom, part crashing
I downloaded MP2 the day it was released, but to this day I have still not even considered installing the game... I only downloaded it because my room-mate wanted to play it...
And about the SS2 question: I really doubt it's Serious Sam 2 he's talking about... I really liked Serious Sam, but got pretty bored before finishing the first mission in Deux Ex... I never actually finished the first mission...

Oh, and for the "Greatest action game poll", my vote goes to Duke Nukem 3D or Redneck Rampage

In Deus Ex you start out extremely weak. Playing on "realistic damage" level, for instance, even your basic enemy can kill you in one shot with their pistol if they get lucky and hit you in the head. By the end of the game though, you can end up as a tank that doesn't really notice damage that enemies do to you.
For "pure" action games though, Quake 2 is awsome in single-player mode.

I see I didn't make it all clear about what I wanted to say. Here's the short version:
MP1: Very boring... I hate the bullet-time
SS2: (As in Serious Sam 2) I really like
Deux Ex: Never kept me interested enough for me to finish first mission...

Only one thing can keep* me interested in fps games... and that is humor... the humor in Serious Sam games is
Oh yeah, and mp might get me back to the game also... that is, if there's a lan party, and the others wants to play some fps game...
* By 'keep' I mean that I'll still play after a few months after release...

You obviously never gassed your enemies and then threw darts at their heads.
Or carried around a crate of TNT to throw at your enemies (and then try to run away from the explosion before it took out both of your legs as well).
