free game inside!
on another forum(at quartertothree) i saw this and i just had to share...

Most multiplayer games exhibit a very simplistic concept of teamwork, if any. Allegiance is a 3D space shooter/sim in the tradition of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter that goes far beyond any similar efforts in this arena. With support for up to 58 players in small game mode and 200 players in big game mode, eight different factions each with five distinct research paths, several different categories of spacecraft, a dedicated commander position with an RTS style 3D interface and a gameplay style that demands coordinated teamwork to accomplish anything, Allegiance goes where no multiplayer game has ever gone before. And all this works great on a bog-standard P2 with a 56K modem.

it looks pretty good but it is only multiplayer(it has some single player training though) but it seems practically like a massive multiplayer game since it can support so many players at once and it seems most games last quite a long time(i saw mention of 80 mins on that site's forum). i haven't played it yet but it's looks quite deep to put it lightly. the source code was also just released by microsoft along with all the graphics/etc so i'm almost 100% sure it's abandonware too. it's about a 40mb download so try it out!

Wow, I beta tested this game years ago. If it wasn't pay-to-play it would've had a huge following. Mix of an RTS (Command view) with space sim...

 But it isn't pay-to-play.

It's pay-to-play as an officer.

I didn't realize it was the same game, actually.
I thought allegiance did pretty well - I remember hearing alot of people talk about it when it was released.

I'm behind a modem acting as router, and I can't connect to the game. It's so sad. I can't even find connection options in the game to make it work

Ah, I was a beta-tester for this game. It was pretty decent, not bad at all. Of course it wasn't good enough for me to pay $10/month either .

So do I have to pay to play, or not?

You can play as two kind of players: 1) being an ordinary pilot (the one behind his joystick) is wholly free. 2) being an officer (the one behind his mouse, directing the other players and automated ships) needs to be paid.
Also, bear in mind you should take it with a pinch of salt, since I couldn't connect behind my router

No, you don't have to... I remember when I was playing of those two kinds of players, that was the main draw, so it was in the beta.
I never played the officer, though.

Those graphics look pretty good for abandonware.
