Help setting up multi player game

I'm trying to start a multi player game with my mate over te internet, I act as host and go through selecting the options etc and the game starts, My mate is waiting in the multiplayer room and can't see my game on the list, how do i get my game to appear on the list or een better a step by step guide to starting a multi player game would be great
