That'll be Sky whose only original programming consists of that sit com with the landlord and Club Reps or similar ? And for this you pay way more than the licence fee ? The same Sky whose commitment to regional broadcasting is overwhelming ? The new ITV channel showed its commitment to local TV by trying to cut its output or move it to a central location. When STV bought Grampian one of the first things they looked at was whether Grampian news could be made in Glasgow.

Commercial realities means that a lot of what the BBC does is only going to be done by a public broadcaster not chasing adverts.

Agree about Hardtalk though but then it is cheap to make.

Ok, my two penneth.

Well for a start to the BBC being public has been around longer than any person on these forums that I know of. Obviously starting on the radio, they owned a monopoly and it was feared that this gave a private organisation too much power (oh lordy how they'd turn in their graves to see the Fox empire). The BBc was bought off and made public, regulated to be as politically neutral as possible. Each party must be allowed equal time on the airwaves.

Every party that has ever been in power has complained of BBC bias against them, thats the Conservatives, not just Labour. Should the Greens or Liberal Democrats ever come to power similar accusations would doubtless be made.

Sky news is very much as it looks - tacky and melodramatic. Personally I tend to watch BBC News or ITN. Fox News makes baby Jesus cry.

As for our main TV channels -

BBC1 - Occassionally gets some quality programmes, but tends to lag behind the other channels in terms of social prograssion or, more recently, genuinly original programming, though there are notable exeptions to the contrary (such as Tipping the Velvet and The Office).
BBC2 is fairy similar save for endlessly repeating the same 5 or so episodes of The Simpsons. Annoyingly (and unlike the other channels) frequently cancels good programmes for utterly retarded 'sports' such as snooker.

ITV are generally middle of the road, tending to stick with safer topics and always producing run-of-the-mill romantic dramas. And the have Coronation Street which is good

Channel 4 have to be my favourite channel. By far the most liberal and daring (though sometimes comes accross as tacky), they have the best youth-oriented programming. If only they'd drop the appalling reality TV shows.

Channel 5 really are appalling. Never seeming to have produced a single programme worth noting, they are prone to endlessly showing dull films from the mid-ninties such as 'Mrs Doubtfire' and borderline cheap pornography from the 80s at night. The Spicegirls were their launch icon. Nuff said.

Sky One's only saving grace is the new American programmes which they acquire. New episodes of The Simpsons and 24 are the only reason anyone would want to watch this channel, they produce even less quality programming themselves than channel 5. Unless you like 'Kirsty's Temptation Island Simpleton Makeover Challenge'.

Why aren't BBC3 and BBC4 on terrestrial television. I had to find the delights of them through my BSkyB satellite dish. And they had adverts breaking up the programming.

There are also other TV channels that the BBC has a hand in that are only shown on non-terrestrial television.


Are they autonomous entities? Do they get any of the licence monies if they are? Are they net income earners - if so are they commercial enterprises that proove the BBC can operate commercially?

So many questions. Anyone have answers?

I get BBC3 and 4 through my FreeView box - they are only available on digital - not through reqular cable or non-digital sattelite.

I do like BBC3, if only there were less repeats.

I don't remember seeing ads on them...

NPR does occasionally have conservatives and libertarians on to defend their views. You don't get that to often on the other news networks (more than the viewpoint of 1 side of an issue).

I never trusted them with a grain of salt.

Maybe I'm just thinking of channles like UK Gold that show old BBC programmes with ad-breaks in them.
