Hello, this is Shawn's wife speaking. He asked me to post this on his behalf. He had been in the hospital and will be getting out tomorrow. He actually asked me to post this 2 weeks ago, but with everything going on I just forgot. Apologies to all this may concern.

May I inquire into what kind of celebration and for?
Anyway my message...
Just a notice in advance - I'm moving to a new place so as of June 30rd late evening GMT -8, I will not have any internet access until July 14th for PBEM purposes.
I really prefer not to do this but if you want me to look into a temporary replacement, I will.
Too bad I can't install the game on my work computer so I could just continue playing

Traditional celebration:
"Ligo" & "Jani" or summer starting celebration..
I think Christianity also has somthing very similar for that date
Turn is sent

Sorry about my wife's post on this thread - she posted on all my SMAC threads while I was in hospital, she had no way to tell which I was playing in. Doing fine now.

Welcome back, Shawnmmcc! Glad to see you are doing fine.
Ligo and Jani? Is that a local or religion related?

Ack, these holidays are not timing themselves particularly well... I was going to be away skiing on the 24th to 31st of July
I might have internet access down there though so, I may be able to keep up anyway

Both:
Tradition to celebrate the longest day of year dates back to origins of agriculture & farming in this region..
Actually Baltic tribes had such a tradition long before they migrated to present territory of Latvia
It is one of the oldest traditions of the world so it's impossible to weigh out whether it's religious or local/national tradition.
And you must remember that
traditions + ambitions = religion
So it's almost the same except of "ambitions" factor
Muhammad wouldn't have developed Islam if he hadn't got the intention to unite the Arabic tribes & belief that all other religions are "wrong" or "imperfect"..
I must admit that this belief is mostly based on tradition & mentality too..
Christianity celebrates this day too but with much less devotion.
"Ligo & Jani" is the most popular celebration in Latvia
And I mean "in Latvia" not "of Latvians" because most of other nations living here celebrate them too..
