Recruiting for you guys :p
This is I think the 5th time in the past week or so that I've directed someone to your Team DG from #Apolyton. You guys should really consider just having someone idle in that channel and direct people that come online interested in SMAC to this game (though I guess that's what OctavianX does some of the time). You'd be surprised how many people new to this site sign on to the chat server as the first thing they do on the site and just try to chat up anyone in there to find if there's anything of interest on the site.
Here's the log:

* PBEMfreak has joined #Apolyton
PBEMfreak> anyone here?
Arnelos> hey
PBEMfreak> anyone?
PBEMfreak> awesome
Arnelos> I was away the last time you came in
PBEMfreak> yeah, i figures
PBEMfreak> figured
PBEMfreak> I have a question about online SMAC
PBEMfreak> how do you do it?
Arnelos> it's been a long time since I played SMAC, really
Arnelos> used to play it a TON
Arnelos> but that was a long time ago
PBEMfreak> yeah, it is a pretty old game
Arnelos> most of my SMAC mp experience was LANplay
PBEMfreak> which games do you play now?
Arnelos> Civ3, mostly
Arnelos> that and other games
PBEMfreak> u like that game?
Arnelos> yeah
Arnelos> it's alright
PBEMfreak> is it very similar to SMAC?
Arnelos> there are some similarites
PBEMfreak> the game looks really good
Arnelos> there are some features Firaxis introduced in SMAC that got carried over to Civ3 that weren't in Civ2
Arnelos> but other stuff left out
Arnelos> other stuff that's new
PBEMfreak> I plyed Civ2 and the thing i hated was how the cities always looked the same, even when you got to 1990s
* settler2 has joined #apolyton
* settler2 has quit IRC (Quit: settler2)
Arnelos> heh
Arnelos> well, at least for THAT (graphical stuff like that), Civ3 is better
PBEMfreak> but, from screen shots from Civ3, the cities change, right?
Arnelos> not really how a I judge a game, but that's better, true
Arnelos> yes
PBEMfreak> o most definately
PBEMfreak> gaming is all about fee,l and playing ability
PBEMfreak> so, you dont remember how to do multiplayer SMAC?
Arnelos> man, it's been ages since I last played SMAC... I was a regular on the Firaxis forums back before it came out and played it a lot after it came out... but haven't played it much in about 3 years
PBEMfreak> how good were you?
Arnelos> :shrug:
Arnelos> I was decent, not spectacular
Arnelos> I've learned a lot since then
PBEMfreak> like what?
Arnelos> mostly by playing Civ3 and reading the strategy forums on Apolyton
PBEMfreak> when i play on higher dificulties, i get killed
Arnelos> read the strategy forums here
PBEMfreak> ok, will do
Arnelos> some of the stuff is REALLY helpful
Arnelos> especially with the higher difficulty levels
Arnelos> most of the really good threads are probably burried, though
PBEMfreak> cool, thanks
Arnelos> you'll have to dig to find them
PBEMfreak> darn
Arnelos> you could post in the SMAC forum and ask if anyone has links though
PBEMfreak> are the forums active here?
Arnelos> yeah, pretty active
Arnelos> depends on the forum, though
PBEMfreak> good, nothing more frustrating than a forum that no one reads
Arnelos> I honestly don't know how active the SMAC main forum is
Arnelos> I know the SMAC Democracy Game is very active
PBEMfreak> ?
PBEMfreak> whast that.?
Arnelos> democracy game... a bunch of people play each player position as a team
Arnelos> pbem
PBEMfreak> o
PBEMfreak> well, i am a pbem freak, so that ounds pretty cool
Arnelos> check it out
Arnelos> it's very active, from what I hear
Arnelos> the SMAC game, that is
PBEMfreak> is it in the forums?
Arnelos> yeah, I think there's a link from the main SMAC forum
* PBEMfreak has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving)
Arnelos> the SMAC DGers should pay me for this job... I think that's now 5 new members I've sent their way in the past week

Pish! You're just slacking off from Consular duties! And if they all turned up when I was in #apolyton we would have a far more EFFECTIVE result - new CPU recruits.

Here's another one:

* Teqxan has joined #Apolyton
Teqxan> so what is the topic of discussion ??
Octavian_X> the beauty of silence...
Arnelos> (chuckle)
Arnelos> in reality, all but maybe 3 people in this channel aren't really HERE
Arnelos> just idling
Teqxan> 1so other than posting in the ?? forums ?? area how does one get into a game ??
Arnelos> it really is deceptive that the nicklist of who is in here appears on the main Apolyon page
Arnelos> Teqxan - which game?
Teqxan> so i take it that it mirrors the mIRC
* settler2 has joined #apolyton
* settler2 has quit IRC (Quit: settler2)
Arnelos> which game do you want to play?
Teqxan> just looking to get into a smac or smax game ..
Arnelos> ah
Arnelos> well... several options I'm aware of
Teqxan> havent had any human competition
Arnelos> 1. I believe there is a SMAC/SMAX pbem forum and an MP forum... post there asking if people want start a game
Teqxan> and the AIs r getting to be easy even when they r @ transend and U random there personalities
Arnelos> 2. There is a SMAC Democracy Game (teams of people play each faction in a game), it has its own forum
Teqxan> last one sounds rather kewl
Arnelos> the forum name is "AC - Democracy Game"
Arnelos> I think
Arnelos> you can find it on the forum list
Teqxan> i did post in smac forum last night
Teqxan> someone said to go over to the multi pl;ayer foirum if i could abide by ther rules
|
He asked about other stuff after that before signing off a bit later.
My guess is that a good 80% of the new people that come to Apolyton and sign into #apolyton as one of their first actions are SMAC players looking for MP play of some sort or another. If there was some way to direct more of them to your Democracy Game here than simply a random chance of running into someone in #apolyton, that might be really helpful to you guys and them.
Don't know just what, though. I trust that you guys probably already have a healthy number of posts in the Apolyton SMAC news section of the site? If not, that might be a start.

I think we do, but no-one really reads it. A front page ad might be nice though....

Possibly PM DanQ. Would be nice But I'd let Tass as GM or one of the faction leaders do it. Though if you wish I'm sure you could
