I'm so tempted to just go ahead and place my bases.
Guys, start analyzing your start locations, then place 4 - 7 cities.
Lets get this rolling already.

I'll place 30 cities!
Just kidding.
I've already placed 7 bases. Perhaps one more, not sure though.
I'll upload the map as soon as I figure out how to post a ScreenShot here in the forums.

Well, Mellian...
I don't want to sound rude or mean or anything. Its just that people have been patient waiting to start writing for this story. The longer the delays, people will lose more interest and ambition to participate.
Please keep that in mind, Mellian.

there, i started updating the Datalinks thread. what else should be added for Settings and Guidelines at this time?
as for base placements, who needs a pic of the areas your chosen factions will start at to decide where bases should be?

I need a pic of Garland Crater, as well as the areas to the south, east, and west of it.
I dunno how to upload pics up here to display in threads. I did a long time ago, but forgot how to.
Thanks for starting Datalinks, Mellian.

I looked over Datalinks, and it looks excellent so far.
BTW, regarding the pics I need, could you include a clear view of grids on it? I remember in SMAC they had the option to show grids. It'll be far easier to plan out base placement and layout with grids turned on.
Thanks in advance.

I think I need one. From the placement, it seems that the Believers are near the Uranium Flats. Not a bad starting placement if I do say so myself......

Mellian, could you put up BOTH the screenshots and the map file?
So people who want screenshots like myself and Franky can get them, while Obstructor can get his full map file.
...waits one more week for Mellian to reply / post maps...
Hehe.

Hi folks!
I just dropped by to have a look. Been a long time since I visited this forum. Glad to see some of the "old gang" are still alive and kicking. This kind of sounds like fun, but I'm afraid I won't have time to properly follow up in the long run, so I choose not to commit myself to this kind of project at this time. Besides, I see the Peacekeepers are already spoken for. This visit brought back some nice memories though. Thank you all for the good times we shared during the previous Chiron Chronicles. I wish you good luck with this new project and hope you'll enjoy your story!

Hi, Guardian.
Good to see you. Still reading BAC, Hydro's PBEM's, and the occasional original SMAC fiction?
Mellian, excellent. Good to hear you're learning HTML.

okay, here is the modified map for those who have Alien Crossfire, and here is the guidelines concerning base placement.
-not sure how many bases an faction should have by 2250...but how about making it the average of 5?
any base higher than that would mean the factions pop could be more spread out, and bases have less amount of infrastructure averagely...
and those with less bases than the average would mean their bases are bigger, their pop more concentrated, and more infrastructure.
-each square is 200km x 200km, so realisticly, can technicly have bases in adjacent squares from each other...but i think should be a minimum of one square away from each other without effectivity of bases production and etc compromising each other.
-i'd rather see bases being on the same continent from each other, or on islands or as seabases off the coast of where they are on the continent. like, can have outposts and etc setup in a distance, but actual Bases not to far from each other. as for the pirates, generally stay in the same sea to start off.
-bases doesn't automaticly define where your borders are, something to figure plot wise, and between authors if they are adjacent from each other....but borders can't be more than 1000km from the nearest base, as in about five squares. seabases won't have borders further than about 500km...2-3 squares.
-when placing bases, keep in mind of the other factions neighouring yours, which would realisticly effect where a faction places their bases from 2100 to 2250.
so yes...any questions or suggestions?

when writing up a post after pressing post reply, there is a section to attach a file. when you attach pics, the forum automaticly shows them in the post.
just scroll down in that reply page.

I don't know why, but I can't seem to mark my map with my intended base location.
Are there any free JPEG editing software that I could download, or any trial versions?
I'd like to know so I can edit my JPEG's including the maps Mellian gave me.

just give me the coordinates of where you would like the bases to be, or describe where.
as for jpeg programs, can get adobe photoshop. can also get the non-trial 'evaluation' with kazaa.
i am trying to find time, but i am behind my schoolwork and i am tyring to catch up. also doesn't help the fact i have been spending a lot of time out lately to.
there is not only the authored factions bases to consider, also have to figure out those of the factions that have no authors and etc, which will take a few hours to figure out.

I'll have to use another computer.
Hopefully I'll have the picture edited and ready to upload by Friday at the latest.
Are you going to have more free time over the summer, Mellian?

What you can do also is save jpg as bitmap, edit it in paint for example and then save as jpg again.
This one will shuffle formats:
http://www.irfanview.com/
freeware for home use.
This one is quite powerfull, but complicated. You can get free code from Satori for version 2.29
