The auto-logout issue...
Um, hate to start another thread on this, but the other one was closed without a resolution due to spam and all the old threads on this are in the Archive.
This just happened to me again, in both Poly windows. Although not a huge concern it is a bit of a nuisance.
Can we have a mod give us an idea on this - whether it is a real bug or something unavoidable/too difficult to attempt to fix? We didn't get that by the time the other thread was close. If it makes a difference, there are currently 82 members and 112 guests on Poly - is that enough for the supposed 'server load' cause mentioned as a possibility by rah in an earlier thread?

I've been auto-logged out many times... usually once a week on average...

Back when I were using IE I used to get autologged out sometimes, but since I started to use Mozilla Firebird (now Firefox) I've never had any sush problems.

It's quite rare here. Ironically it happened this morning though.

It never happens to me on IE.
I have to say that the worst browsers for Poly are AOL and Opera, in that order. Both log out all the time, and AOL doesn't let you vote in polls either.

Who in their right mind would even use AOL?

Since I switched to IE 6, I haven't had any problems with this.

Maybe I should upgrade.
Still, I'm not sure it's the browser since it has only happened recently.

This almost never happens to me. If I'm in the middle of typing up a long post and I get distracted and come back to my computer 10-15 minutes later, then yes, I get logged off. Otherwise, not a problem.
I use IE, as it seems most others without a problem do.

The first thread was closed by MarkG because of spam. If this one gets closed for the same reason, I'm just going to restrict and PCR the offenders...

So can everyone actually stick to the topic please (meaning don't post unless you have an answer, basically)? I would very much like to have this thread around long enough for some kind of official response, because if it's closed AGAIN I daresay any new thread would be instantly locked.

Changing browsers you visit here with is a solution, assuming you are on your own computer and not a uni one. You have yet to even mention what browser you use though.

*Sigh
Well since many others have already posted that it apparently happens with all sorts of browsers, thus I suspected it was a more general issue than browser-specific and thought it wasn't necessary, but alright.
It happens at home with a Uni computer (ie behind a firewall) and IE6, also with my computer (no firewall) and IE6. It is happening on this Uni computer (behind a firewall) on Mozilla 5.

It happens to me all the time using Mozilla (I'm not sure what version I was using, it is uninstalled now). Try Opera and see if that solves your problems on the home computer.

It's a cookie issue, that much I know. Therefore it seems to be that it's unlikely to be a server problem. Strangely, it has never happened to me when I use a *nix box.

I get auto log out (IE6) on a VBB forum where I do not use auto log on. It appeared to be connected to the cycleling of ad banners. Perhaps a combination of the thrid party cookies the banners tried to install, my IE security setting for cookies, and my not automatic log on choice.

Some of these problems are extremely hard to trace, when there are so many interactions between various parts.

It happens to me fairly often (about once a day when I'm in a posting spree). And I use Mozilla for years now.

I can't speak for anyone else, but, for me, this is an important question. Was it answered in the previous thread you referred to?? Can "someone" who knows please answer...
1) Why does this happen??
2) Is there something I can do from my end to keep this from happening??
Thanks,
Monk

As I said, it's a cookie problem. Your identity is stored in cookies, so when they got removed, Poly ceases to recognise you. Now, I am not sure how does that happen, though it's a problem that is going to be very hard to trace.

I wouldn't argue with that, but there are clearly other factors at work here, with the intermittent occurrence of this for some.

Actually might sound stupid, but how much space have you allocated for temporary internet folders? I am not sure if cookies count against this limit, but maybe the problem is there. And no I never had this problem And I only allocated 50 MByte (my possible minimum) for it.

Hmm...
I think I vaguely remember that, if you clear out your disk cache, the problem gets fixed. At least for IE.

Well, this may be the reason indeed: since I formatted three weeks ago, I don't seem to have this problem anymore.
