Rockstar Games Announces Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Monday March 1, 7:55 am ET

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 2004--Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing division of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO - News), is pleased to announce Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the next iteration in the globally successful Grand Theft Auto franchise. Developed by world-class designers Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be available exclusively for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and is expected to be in stores in North America on October 19, 2004 and in Europe on October 22, 2004.

"In the past couple of years, we have put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure we do everything possible to exceed people's expectations with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," stated Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games. "Even though we still have eight months to go, we are starting to become very proud of what we have achieved and we can't wait to get the game into players' hands."

Leslie Benzies, President of Rockstar North, stated, "We are extremely humbled by the success of the Grand Theft Auto series and it has made us push ourselves further than ever to create a title in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that will hopefully redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values."

Over 30 million units of the Grand Theft Auto franchise have been shipped to date, including over 11.5 million units of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and over 10.5 million units of Grand Theft Auto 3.
........
I love this

However, if this won't come out for the PC, I'm going to get nasty on their arse!

While I very much enjoyed GTA:VC, I hope there are some significant improvements made to the game engine & mechanics to justify the price; I also hope the PC version is cleaner (not content-wise, but bug and performance-wise).

You ever played GTA? Like Templar said, greatest video game series EVER! The Civ series can't even hold a candle to it.

I'd pay $50 for GTA:VC engine just redone for SA . But it looks like they are going to make refinements.

Looks like we'll have to wait for it on the PS2 first though.

You dont belong. You're not one of the chosen, leave now.

as for the subject of the thread...

But lets hope it has a lotta bit more depth this time. If it's just GTA with a new city again I will burn all of my GTA games.

In my eyes you are but a silly chieftan. ( with a bad avatar! )

Really though, how do you think GTA is better than Civ? I admit GTA is a great game but no where's near as great as the Civilization series, which only consists of two games contrary to popular belief.

number three is not sacred, a false prophet infected the holy name of Civilization with this trash! But I shall save my anger for another time.

I hope the PC adaptation will go the GTA Vice City route: a real adaptation (and not a mere port) they take time to do correctly, encouraged by the mindboggling sales on PS2

The San Andreas bit of the title would suggest otherwise....
It may well have gambling, but I'd imagine they're going to keep their cards close to their chests on this one, and not release too much in the way of tasty titbits for the time being.

I just saw this yesterday as I recieved a newsletter about it... great news... EXCEPT for the fact that you can't play it on the PC for at least a year

...damn consoles...

I just hope they finally include MP, but I doubt it... I've heard some rumours say that they wont include MP before GTA 4...

That was based on a rumour started by Amazon.co.uk, which had a listing for GTA: Sin City (Las Vegas) not too long ago.

Rockstar denied it, and later released this statement saying the new GTA will be set in San Andreas (San Fransisco).

Rumours have it that there still may be a GTA Sin City, but it will come out on the GBA.

Conflicting rumours about the nature of GTA: San Andreas. Some claim it will be set in the 1970s (GTA VC was set in the 80s, GTA London (PSOne) in the 60s). Some claim it will be a modern time setting, influenced by the rap/gangsta culture of California. If this is true, San Andreas might seem more like Los Angeles than San Fransisco.

All still rumours though.

I'm so glad I have a PS2 and not some crappy X-box, or I'd have to wait another year or two to play the game.

My prayers goes for it not to be in 1970... I hated Vice City because it was set in 1980... I HATED London because it was set in 1960 AND London...

1980's music... I was surprised to discover that that decade actually produced some good songs. Who would have thought it?

Definitely not me.

It's worrisome that I now think of Billy Jean more than of any other song

I personally just loved Maurice Chavez's emission on the VCPR. I also loved their ads, when they said "send us money to fund our ad-free station"

Yes, one of VC's best features was the 80s music.

I can only hope, pray, and plead that SA will, in fact, take place in the 70s.

Imagine--classic rock, funk, and for the masochistic among us, disco. This will be perfect.

I agree with Marcus--if it is the 70s, I imagine the city will be San Fran-like. (Sort of a playable version of the old TV show, Streets of San Fransisco.) If it is more modern, my bet would be on LA.

Does anyone remember San Andreas from the first GTA?

I remember the Golden Gate bridge, and the huge houses on the hills above the city. Chinatown was cool, and of course you could drive the tank along the seafront and waste everybody!

If it's using the same name, then I imagine it'll be SF. The trams on the hills and Alcatraz will be hard to beat.
I only hope that they include the stadia so I can blow the hell out of the 49ers.
