Yes, my German is very rusty. But on the other hand, it's hardly spoken in Australia (except in South Australia, in parts of the Barossa Valley and places such as Hahndorf). And I haven't used it in, oohh, about twelve years. And you try remembering time manner place with a cat on your lap.

And I did mean kann and not darf.

I might have meant 'a man' or 'a husband'.

And it's Skåne, not Skane, plus we only have Northern Slesvig anyway. Frankly I'm appaled at your fragmentary knowledge of my country's history.

to the Danes- there used to be an excellent Danish shop in London, in Villiers Street near Embankment Station, which sold the best Danish pastries I've ever had- and these delicious cakes made out of green marzipan and shaped like frogs.

It's really funny about the Schleswig-Holstein question. I seem to recall a very similar anecdote to the one you just told, but with the characters substituted for Danish contemporaries. People must have regarded it as the Kashmir or Palestine of the time. Which of course detracts a bit from the fun factor when you think about it.

Oh, and here are some vowels for you to cut and paste, so in the future we won't have to hear pathetic excuses for not conforming to the proper spelling of our beautiful language.
