I second or third or whatever the notion that there are many many good debaters here on Apolyton. I would judge a good debater as one who actually listens to the arguments of the other and provides a cogent rejoinder or a concession where appropriate. People who never concede a point or that simply leave a thread if they are defeated in an argument lose my respect. Che would have made the top of my list but for the fact that he never, ever agrees with his opponent on even the smallest point. Ditto, Imran.
I apologize if I omit somebody in the following list that I really respect, but my list must include
Spiffor
Whaleboy
Sikander
Honorable mention:
Michael the Great
Molly
Ming
Siro
Ben

I don't dispute that. It's just that he has a problem with relating it to the real world. His "evidence" doesn't come close to supporting the conclusions he draws from it. The itunes thread is a(nother) blatant example. I challenge anyone to support his ridiculous viewpoint - it's at odds with the facts.
In summary it's very easy to beat up on him effectively without having any specialist technical knowledge. Drake is also quite good at this, when he can be bothered.

Appleby was the machiavellian Permanent Secretary in a comedy series from the early 80s called "Yes, (Prime) Minister". He was played by Nigel Hawthorne.
Great series if you ever get a chance to see it.

I'd say just the opposite.
He has an understanding of what the common user wants and needs more than anybody around here. Everyone else has this, "I use platform so and so, so my method must be the best and everyone else sucks," type of mentality.

Thanks .
Heard of the show, never saw it though. Hopefully BBC America plays some repeats of it one day .

If you mean Wraith hasn't lost a debate, I'd be inclined to agree with you (in that you haven't seen it- I beg to differ ) but afa DF goes, I don't recall ever seeing him 'win' one.

I've never seen DF lose a debate and that includes the one time he and I were debating the validity of Gulf War II... Maybe DF knows of a debate he feels he lost, but I don't and I see no proof from you.

Calm down. We don't want to see a gang war between a university philosophy department and the Bill Gates fan club. Actually, yes, we do, 'cause that sounds pretty funny, but give us time to organize, sell tickets, and so on. Be sure to hit each other over the head with ergonomic chairs. And lots of COBOL trash talk. Be sure to taunt Agathon by saying you slept with his woman too; it's hard to guess whether he'd laugh, get angry, or just look confused.

Ahh, finally have a 3rd vote: Doc Strangelove. Have read quite a few of his posts and he always seems to be respectful yet knowledgeable.
Therefore my three are:
Spiffor
Jaguar Warrior
Doc Strangelove

Thankfully, instances where I can be bothered to debate are becoming more and more infrequent. Poly is a lot more enlightening when you stop assigning any value to debates and the people who engage in them.

Well, jelly wrestling would be my favorite. As long as it well flavored. Can't have just plan gelatin or anything!

I'd use seaweed derived jelly- allows good Muslims, Jews and vegans/vegetarians to partake.
Flavoured with attar of roses, jasmine flowers, orange blossom water and a dash of pomegranate juice.
Strip down and get catty, contestants!

It's been rereleased on DVD actually. Sir Humphrey is also one of the reasons I'd like to be a civil servant. Ahhh, to annoy those silly elected people...
