It almost -- but not really -- makes sense. The HD is chronically underused on the Xbox by games, and it costs MS $20-$30 per console to put it in (that adds up to a lot when you sell tens of millions).
They're launching online storage for the new Xbox Live this year, and by 2005-2006 I wouldn't be surprised if memory cards would be substantially faster and be about 512MB.
Current consoles have rather slow disc drives (4x DVD).
One of the best uses of the HD was level caching, used extensively in games like Halo and Ninja Gaiden. When equipped with a, say, 16x DVD-ROM drive, levels can be streamed reliably straight from media rather than on a harddrive.
Still, I really wish they'd left it in...

well at least without a hard drive the idea of patching console games is all but thrown out the window!
unfortunatly, going by just that article, it would seem they intend to make X-Box live the crutch of the system. Something I had hoped could be avoided, but alas it seems Im slowly being proven wrong. Microsoft screws yet another electronics industry. ( Im getting way ahead of things right now )

Maybe there is one other reason:
In belgium and perhaps other countries too*:
Computers are more heavily taxed then consoles( that's why they like to portray them as such here), maybe with the addition of a HD there were looked upon as crossing the line between console and PC too much?
Just a thought.
* Yes, I am aware that MS is going to make a decision like this just because Tiny little Belgium ......

I don't get why people who are equipped with a PC will buy an X-box instead of a PS2. It is really a mystery to me

well yeah i know your GDP per capita figures and all that, i just thought social structures were a tad less overriden by consumerism than here (you know, french making a big deal about not going to McDonalds, etc)
I mean what the heck is the purpose of even having Europe if youre gonna be just as culturally barbaric as we are????

Mega-mega stores aren't really that plentyfull here. Belgium cities are a bit to small for those.
They do exist in Paris and the like., Can't stand them personally though.

Right next to the "my wallet is in the bottomless [/b] pit[/b]
In general, stuff is more expensive here too, by quite a margin aswell.

Because an X-Box is MUCH better than a PS2?
Not all of us have PCs with the latest graphics card and stuff. My PC can play GTA3 pretty well, but Ninja Gaiden with those graphics? Not a chance in Hell!

True, but the X-box is't free either, might aswell upgrade parts of your PC instead of buying a console.

Upgrading your PC isn't free either .
And upgrading a laptop is near impossible.

It is? I have no idea what these boxes cost but a decent card (only) sets you back little more then a 100$, that the price of one console game( ok, it's slightly more)

Xbox's are dirt cheap. In Canada, they sell them for 229$ right now, with two games. And mine came with Halo. I don't think you can have a decent graphic card for that price. Of course, decency is in the eye of the beholder.

I have a four year old laptop. So there was no way for me to play games like Morrowind, Kotor, Splinter Cell, GTA 3, Halo or Ninja Gaiden. So I had a choice: either I buy a new 2000$ computer, or I buy a 200$ Xbox. Tough choice

For me, it's not really a choice, I hardly play games anymore and the PC's real qualities are getting more important ( Office, Programming, Video, audio, etc..).
So my use for a console is next to zero.

I keep my PC relatively up to date since I use it for many different things. PC games also have more to offer me than consoles, so it doesn't bother me spending a bit more on hardware.

Even if you have a kickass PC ( ), consoles complement that.
Console games play fundamentally different than PC games, even when it's a port from one to the other.
