yeah good choice. It's great to start off with. Don't get too discouraged if it seems too simplistic at times. Other RPG's such as Planescape are far more complex with regards to actual role playing and moral choices you make. So if you like KOTOR, games such as BG2, fallout 1 and 2, Planescape Torment, NWN, and Morrowind may be worth a look.

I'd recommend Gothic 2 if your computer is beefy enough to handle the brutal system req's. Totally awesome game that nobody ever mentions. Maybe one of the best games since Ultima7 or Baldurs Gate 2. Another great game that the peeps never mention is Divine Divinity.

Gothic 2 is a really bad game. Even Gothic 1 was better.

Such an ignorant statement. Gothic 2 was universally praised by RPG enthusiasts and got high ratings by most reviewers so calling it BAD is just plain ignorance. I've played RPG's since the ****ing 80's and I think Gothic 2 is top 5 material. Some people (the ones with no patience) didn't like it because it's very frustrating and longwinded. Or maybe they had sucky machines.

No it was a crappy RPG because it was an action game. The combat relied entirely on the player's reflexes, the camera angles didn't help and it was so fiddly to pick stuff up and manage the inventory.

Yes it was a very combat orientated game but it still fits within the definition of an Action-RPG. Even more than completely boring drivel like Morrowind which had the most boring combat system I've ever seen. I had no problems whatsoever with the combat being too fast or with the inventory. You got used to it after an hour anyway.

True, it was better than Morrowind But IMHO Gothic 2 is far too "twitchy" to be considered as a real great RPG. I got so frustrated dying all the time. I suppose players who are used to Quake/Doom etc games will find the combat in Gothic 2 ok, but it was an unrelenting nightmare for me.
Hey, at least I got the game for free

Ok, maybe the fact that I'm also a huge 1st person shooter fanatic made it easier for me adapt to the twitchy combat. I admit that sometimes the action would get so frenetic that I lost control of my character and spun around like a drunk iceskater. But I still maintain my stance that it's the best RPG since Ultima7. My opinion is always right when it comes to RPG's and 1st person shooters.

I also like FPS, but I think as RPG's go I'd rather highlight the good RPG elements rather than try and get good FPS action also. I can play an FPS for that.

I am also a purist. I can go as far as having a tactical segment to resolve combat, but using action elements that has nothing to do with the characters' skills is a big no-no.

But if you play an RPG/FPS combo game, you can level up in two skills at the same time.

Ultima 7?
Compared to the earlier Ultimas, it sucked.
Ultima Underworld was much more interesting.
ACK!

HERETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah well taste is subjective up to a certain point. That point is decided by me, the oracle of RPG gaming. Ultima Underworld was great too. Too bad the ****ing thing won't work in XP. Dosbox is ****.

"I'm in the mood for dancing.... romancing...."
He does seem a tad truculent.
Although this maybe shot out of the water as nepotistic (or near as damn it), I'd much rather go with your recommendations (and your vast experience of pen and paper RPGs) than with those of someone who welcomes a bit of action in the game, but then claims that this makes for the best RPG they've ever played.
