The sad reality is that the levels of public knoweldge abot scientific names is so low that ou could start a campaign against anything if you gave it the scientific name and approched people with it.

And that is due to a shameful level of scientific education in our schools.

Did you know that in Israel, Chemistry, and Biology aren't mandatory.

I studied only physics in school, and even that could've included more information.

I say we start a movement against inorganic substances in out food, not only dihydrogen monoxide, but sodium chloride (which can be broken down, and the chlorine used to make WMD's!) and countless other terrible inorganic dangers!

My mother is a chemistry teacher, and I just approached her speaking of this ban of dihydrogen monoxyde. It took her time to get it, after some reflection, simply because nobody uses the chemical name for it (unlike sodium chlorine, or even H20, which I heard quite a few times in my chemistry classes)

C'mon people, don't overdo it either, why should non-chemists (and alike) need to know what dihydrogen monoxide is.

That's like me making fun of you because you don't speak dutch.

I've just learned that certain shadowy organizations within our our own government are rumored to operate DHMO purification plants under heavy guard, and actually distribute the stuff right in our own communities!

Ah yes, that good old DHMO trick I am amazed that people still fall for it.

Ethyl water...hmmm...I suppose that is hydroxyethane?

And it is quite interesting that Potassium started this thread...because to someone made entirely of potassium, water would be extremely dangerous

Hysterical.

I'm also reminded of the very first Man Show, when they went out and collected signatures to "end the suffrage of women."

Not really. There's no practical reason that a person would want to call water Dihydrogen Monoxide.

What's sad is people's blind faith in anything that sounds scientific.

Don't feel bad, Az (not that you were ). I have a chemical engineering degree and was sitting here thinking "Dang, I'd have to consult my 10th grade chemistry book to be sure of the correct name."

I believe you're right, though, that with the O at -2, it's hydrogen oxide.

The best part of that site I found in my quick scan was the uses list "Used by both the KKK and NAACP during rallies." or something to that effect.

Oooh, so it is easier now to screw with school kids doing their homework with fake informational orgs! The net takes one great leap forward.
You can give it a try, but I know that at least my school covers this particular gag in chemistry. After being put to shame like most of us were, it's not exactly something you forget. Sad though that some people still fall for this.

Hmmm, according to my chem teacher it's monoxide. According to him, all molecules use the mono- prefix, and since oxygen-hydrogen is covalent it's a molecule.

What kind of chem teacher do you have?

Consider CaO. It's calcium oxide, not calcium monoxide. And CaO is a molecule dispite being ionic.

No wonder kids these days are so...

CaO isn't a molecule. Molecules are formed with COVALENT bonds only.

btw, he's a PhD.
