alexman,
It's true that communist cities are reasonably productive, and that cuts down on the need to cashrush, bigtime.
I'm specifically thinking of my offshore resource and luxury possessions. Not being able to cashrush will force me to change my approach, which is fine and all, but it will probably result in some screwups at first.
Normally, when I go found a city "over there" to grab luxuries, I am in a rush, and send over 1-2 galleon loads of units. Likely a setter, 3-4 defenders, and 3-4 attackers.
The city will immediately get a temple, barracks, walls, and a harbor (if possible, sometimes it's inland). Rush worker for 80gold, switch build, rush to completion. Rinse, repeat. Once the barracks is up, I can rush vet units in a pinch. That ability has saved me once or twice, since the AI occasionally is bright enough to pounce on such cities quickly.
I cannot remember ever bringing any workers along. Under communism, workers will be key. Priority will be on developing the terrain for productivity and then boosting pop, so the city can build the improvements it needs. More troops need to show up FAST, so that some may be disbanded for shields to speed production of crucial improvements (temple, barracks, harbor), and obviously also for defense.
Basically, it will force me to plan a bit better. Cashrushing is often my safety net.
