Guinea Pigs required for American Football alpha game
I have come up with the basis for an American Football game, and am looking for two players to play out the trial for me Knowledge of American Football NOT required but knowledge of basic rules appreciated.
I will not disclose any of the formulae I use to getting the game results because I will change them a lot during the alpha.
However, I will post results etc.
Basically, it is formula based and orders affect the formula.
Orders for Offense: Long Pass, Screen, Run
Orders for Defense: Run Blitz, Pass Blitz, Deep Coverage
Players must choose one of the stats from each catagory
QB: Accurate/Power
Defense: Interceptions/Conservative
That's it. Any volunteers?

I'm intrigued to see what will go on here, but you already have your 2 players so good luck.
I'll ride shotgun! Zop's going to have to start practising his Hail Mary.

Some comments:
The passing game seems to just consist of: (1) lateral screen, and (2) deep pass. How about adding a short "stick play"?
This would lead to the addition of a short zone coverage option for defense, Cover-2 for instance.
Furthermore, what is exactly the difference between run-blitzing and pass-blitzing?
If the defense calls a run-blitz and it's a pass, where do the defenders go?
And do we have a kicking game?

Okay: Rules are:
Kick-Off, I get a random muber between 75 and 50. KR is Ran#x (x = 30 - Position on the field) e.g. if you field the ball at the 1, its a random number between 0 and 29.
Offensive Plays
Run: 50% chance of breaking a tackle, if broken, up to 10 yards, if not broken then up to 5.
Hook Route: 50% of completion, Yardage up to 15.
Hail Mary: 25% of completion, Yardage up to 100.
(NOTE: for Hook Route and Hail Mary, if you get a "1" on the completion random number, you get sacked up to 5 yards. If you get a 0, it is an interception)
On 4th Down
Punt: Same as kickoff, except up to 60 yards. No return.
Field Goal: I generate a random number between 0-50. If the number is higher than your position, the kick is good. There are 3 "attempts".
Defensive Plays
Deep Coverage - Long pass has only 20% completion rate
Cover 2 - Hook route has only 60% chance of completion.
[i]Blitz[i] - Increased chance of stuffing the QB/RB for negative yardage
Mentality
As well as giving your defensive play, you must also tell me the mentality of your defense.
Aggressive Higher chance of completion, higer chance of picking off a pass
Conservative less chance of completion.
And that's it, I think
As I said, this is merely an Alpha, so it's bound to have holes.
What I need now are "stats" for your players (i.e. what sortof player they are)
QB: Thrower/Scrambler (thrower has better passing credentials, scrambler has 50% of avoiding a sack and scrambling for up to 10 yards)
RB: Speed/Power (Power has better chance of breaking a tackle, speed gets an extra yard every run)
Defensive Line: Pass/Run (Pass has more chance of a QB sack, run has more chance of stufing a run for negative yardage)
That's defanately it
I need now: Your stats and the first play of the game will go
For posting results, I'll use Dallas and New England as teams.

Kick-off, kinda confusing, do I pick it or what? Who kicks first? you could just do a static start on the 20.
I do think that you have some holes or things are not clearly defined.
The defesive plays need to show what they do for all offensive plays.
For instance:
Cover 2 - Hook route has only 60% chance of completion (higher?). Runs hard harder by 50%, Deep passes are 50% more likely to get completed. etc.
Anyhow, not trying to pick, just clarify.

I don't get this:
Quote:
|
Hook Route: 50% of completion, Yardage up to 15.
(...)
Cover 2 - Hook route has only 60% chance of completion.

I see SC was just ahead of me.
I also have a question with the phrase "better passing credentials" for a pocket QB. The scrambler's benefits are clearly defined, but those of the pocket passer aren't.

There were quite a few things that were not clear, but let us keep asking the right questions and all will come to light.

I have actually played this IRL, and am porting it to the web, so it does work
With Kickoff, I just select who kicks off and what happens. That is totally random.
WRT defensive plays, all of the above holds true UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED. e.g. if you play a Cover 2, the only difference is that hook routes have less of a chance of being complete.
Quote:
|
Cover 2 - Hook route has only 60% chance of completion (higher?). Runs hard harder by 50%, Deep passes are 50% more likely to get completed. etc.
|
The 60% chance of completion is a typo on my part. It is only a 40% completion rate...
WRT to the pocket passer, he has a more accurate pass (e.g. has better chances of complting hook routes/deep balls).
Think of it as Manning and Vick

Okay, Spaced has sent in his "stats", waiting for Zopper. In the mean time, let's kick off (Dallas Kick Off)
==================================================
T. Gowin kicks from DAL 30 to NE 9. B. Johnson to NE 23 for 14 yards (L.Scott)
New England 1st & 10 at their 23 yard line
I need orders for the next TWO plays from both Spaced and Zopper, and team stats from Zopper.

Erm... pass. I think we'll just play for a while and call it quits when we find a glaring hole.
Back to the Game, New England are ready to break the huddle.

Okay, after on paper by myself, I came up with the following amendment:
There is now a 60% chance of completing a hook pass. Cover 2 remains at 40%.
This will not affect this play, so even if Zopp wanted to change he couldn't

25% chance on a Hail Mary! I like them odds.
I'd just keep doing that until I got sacked.
What about intentional grounding?

If you're the Raiders you automatically start at 2nd & 30, to account for intentional grounding and the holding penalty

Between the Patriots and the Cowboys then my least hated has to be New England. Go Zop!

Except that it's now 0514 in New Zealand, and Frozzy won't be online for a few hours.

14:57: A. Smith up the middle for 4 yards, 2nd & 6 at the 27
14:23: A. Smith up the middle for 1 yard, 3rd & 5 at the 28.
Okay, now I need a third down play from each side.
