Gay marriage banners
Open letter to the owners:
1. Why are you soliciting these advertisements?
2. Would it be possible to seek other endorsements?
3. How much does each poster contribute to these causes, and how much would I contribute based on my daily traffic I generate?
As much as I like this site, I do not want to support these organisations. Whereas I appreciate all the hard work that you have put into this site, and I have on numerous occasions expressed both my support, and my desire to donate, I feel that I am left between a rock and a hard place.
I like this site, and have become a member of the community, but morally, I would be complicit to my own beliefs by supporting these organisations.
Therefore, if these banners remain, I see no other option for me, but to withdraw from apolyton, while these banner ads run.
I really enjoy this site, if I did not, it would be an easy decision. But I cannot compromise my own beliefs, even for something that I enjoy considerably.
I would pay you the same amount as I would generate through banner ads and the like for the option of not having the banners, or advertisements come up upon use of the site.
I hope that you will take my points into consideration.
Sincerely,
Ben Kenobi

If you don't want to support those organizations, don't click the banner.
By viewing it and not clicking it, you're costing them money.
Case closed.

Plus, like in your local newspaper: Are you asking for money back if you see an ad you don't like or support the cause for it? Maybe you shall rethink your position .
Plus ever heard of the right of free speech? If you don't like it, don't listen. Or in this case as Asher said (just in different words):
Close the banner!!!!!!!!!!! While having your eyes closed.

Or you could go to a style that doesn't display banner ads.
Or you could just grow up.

I don't believe in God (and have some difficulty believing in composers and sheep with wobbly heads), but I'm not going to try to get you to change your avatar or your signature.
Just ignore them, and they may even go away if they aren't clicked on enough, but for the time being, put up with them. I'm off to click on one if I can find it, to express my support for their right to marry.

While I can appreciate your concerns, perhaps you might now have some appreciation for what women have to put up with on a daily basis with regards to advertising.
I echo Ashur's comment and repeat Shanky's.
Grow up.

Ben, your share of page views here vs. the cash generated by any given banner ad would be pathetically small. But more than likely, payment is based on click-through (not page views), in which case you contribute not at all.
You should also be aware that banner placements at minor sites like Poly are much more likely to be part of a brokered package. I would be shocked if these were actually solicited by ownership here.
BTW, my Poly viewing style is Default-Ultra Special and I don't see banners at all (just the occasional popup when I link within the site). So if you don't like seeing banners -- Change your Poly viewing style! (It's in your control panel under Edit Options/Style Set.)
We'd certainly miss you around here if you chose to leave over something this petty. I respect your POV on the issue that's bothering you, but methinks your Lord would be a Golden Rule deity.
Learn to live and let live.

I was thinking of using more expletive wording, closer to the threads topic, but this quote should do.

That was a great troll, Ben!! You really stirred the pot with that "fake" intolerance. You've got everyone convinced you are afraid you might "catch" something from seeing a banner. Isn't it queer how dumb some folk are??

Bloody Monk:
I wouldn't be too sure Ben Kenobi was trolling. I've never seen him showing any trace of tolerance in his long OT history, so this is pretty much in-character. If he is trolling here, then he has been consistently trolling ever since he appeared in the OT.

Ben, don't leave. I disagree with you 99% of the time (including now), but you post with sincerity, conviction and (rarest of all in the OT) civility. Apolyton would we the lesser for losing you.
However, if the choice is to be between keeping the banner for gay marriage (and thus losing you) and keeping you at the expense of allowing your intolerance to force the owners to remove the ad, then I for one, with the sincerest respect for you, would prefer to keep the ad.
Please reconsider the position you've taken. I would hate to see you leave.

His last post was made 25 minutes after he opened this thread, but since it's only been a day then I wouldn't get too concerned yet. If he isn't back after the weekend, then that'd be different.

yep, big reason for concern. A guy expresses his opinion on a matter that is important to him (maybe a troll, maybe not). Big reason for concern if he doesn't post again. Earth shattering possibilities if all of you got fooled by his troll..

I would value Ben's presence on OT more than any other I think. At least he has the independence of thought to have his own opinions rather than just spouting back the opinions of other like most people here seem to do.

I was under the impression that Ben quoted scripture constantly and based his viewpoints around various interpretations from the bible, showing a total lack of independence of thought as evidenced by his ridiculous, contradicting positions.

Not on my home machine.
Will attempt to make an effort to capture the banner on this computer, (since this one has an image editing program available.)

If you don't want to support those organizations, don't click the banner.
|
If that's the deal, then fine, I have no problem.
What I do have a problem is if my support is also going to an organisation to which I do not agree.

I would think Rogan has considerably more familiarity with scripture to make a qualified assessment.
