Open Player Game IP 24.19.83.176
I've been thinking about all the posts from newbies and others where they are wanting a game but can't find anyone to play. What do you think of an "open game" where no one feels terribly married to a given Civ and anyone can pop in and play a Civ whenever they, or a free Civ, is available?
For example, this week at 7PM five people show up and take their favorite Civ and play a few hours. Next week, however, only one person (the dedicated host ) was available and the game continues with 4 different people plus an AI. The next game, the person who was beat up badly switches Civs (first come first choice) and lets the AI deal with the Barbs!
Mostly I'm thinking that I would be willing to be a dedicated host and let people get their feet wet in MP without promising their lives away! What about the only mostly-dedicated host who has to take the spouse out for the night , for fear of becoming an EX-host? Well the host could email the save to a semi-regular player and let the game continue.
I propose King or Emp level (so as not to scare off newbies) with Raging Hordes to help humble ICS'ers. 1x Production, 1x Moves, usual cheats banned (no city bribes, no whining AH, moderate wan...oh, wait, wrong thread )
Actually, I think I'll just start one now, King level (that's to encourage newbies, not an old-timer cheat!) Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30 PM CST (8:30 EST)
ICQ # 48395064
IP 24.19.83.176 (that's a cable, so the number is constant)
I'll start in a few minutes and see what happens!
On second thought, I'll wait and see if any one thinks that this is a good idea....

Actually that sounds pretty good. I've wanted to get into MP for awhile. My only problem is working out what time zone you're in.
What is 7.30pm CST in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)?

That is an excellent idea. I've really been wanting to try MP, and I just picked up ICQ. My ICQ # is 84760512. Count me in!

MacUser - sounds like a good plan. I am available at irregular intervals, and can't commit to a game where people are expecting me to show up on schedule. It's kind of difficult taking over for someone else, but I'd much rather play MP than watch TV in a hotel room!

Zagbo - I am near Kansas City and the time is GMT-6:00. Currently it is 6:22 AM CST here, 12:22 PM GMT and 9:22 PM in Melbourne (GMT+15).
A really cool website for finding the time is http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock.
Somgu - I am just the most humble keeper of the Mac CivII page and Mac Civ II Forum Moderator. Webmaster is a VERY loose term with me! The real Webmasters and owners are DanQ and MarkG. Check out the About Apolyton page for a listing of all the helpers on the ACS at http://apolyton.net/about/
I'm glad that ya'll think that this is a good idea. We'll start next Tuesday night.

kcbob - with MGE, you need to have patch 1.3, or you flat-out can't join the game.

Smash and DaveV - Thanks for responding about the patches! Especially for the links Smash!
KCBob - It's more confusing that you know! When I originally posted the time, I was looking at London on the World Clock site and used that time to calc the difference between KC CDT and GMT; London is currently observing DT also! So I guess London also adds an hour to GMT! My "bad"! Good catch! It's a wonder that I show up on time for anything!
Everyone, I still plan on starting an "Open Game" tomorrow night Tuesday Aug 22 at 7:30 CDT or 12:30 AM GMT Wed. Aug 23 and 10:30 AM Wed Aug 23 in Melbourn! Check out theMeeting Planner on the World Clock .
See ya' tomorrow!

This is too cool! I'd love to try but I've always felt a little intimidated by the commitment needed. Two questions, though. Can Macs and PCs play in the same game? And MacUser, can we talk on the phone sometime? I live in Shawnee. Small world (40x50), huh?
BTW. Not meaning to throw a monkey wrench in to the hour computation but we're on Daylight Savings Time in KC. Therefore, if it was 6:22 on your clock, MacUser, then it would be 11:22 GMT, n'est-ce pas?

Well, it's 7:44PM CDT and no one showed up on ICQ. So I've started the game (waiting at the Join window) and will wait around to see if someone stumbles in anonymously.
It is now 8:00 and no one is here. I'll start the game in earnest with the AI. You can Hot Join at IP 24.19.83.176.

Well, the AI and I played until 9:00PM and 475BC. No one showed up. We can try again on Thursday. The game had a good, clean start with no extra techs give to the host. So far the Aztecs seem to be the big dog on the block having the largest city (5) and the Hanging Gardens. I'm playing Americans mostly because I recognize the city names!
I'll continue on Thursday at around 7:30 CDT. In the meantime, go out and get ICQ . Both Mac and PC versions are available.

Don't for get to come to tonight's Open Player Game! I'll start at around 7:30 PM CDT. I may be a bit late due to a parent/teacher conference at 6:30. Look for me on ICQ and/or check this thread!
You can also Hot Join at any time once the Game has started at the above IP addresss.

The Open Player Game will continue tonight at 7:30 pm CDT.
Don't foget to signup for ICQ! It makes Multiplayer games much easier to setup!
Novi - speaking of ICQ, is the number in your profile correct? I tried to add you to my list and ICQ could not find you or your email address.
As of last week two Civs have been claimed: the Americans (myself) and the Celts (MWintry). The others are available and infact both Americans and Celts are too per the above posts!

My ICQ died again. I've downloaded this twice now. It seemed to be working at lunch yesterday, but when I got home last night it wouldn't load up again. I'm not sure what I could possibly be screwing up, it seems so straight forward. Anyhow, I'm going to give it another shot this afternoon when I get home. Hopefully I'll be on for tonight.

I'm afraid that either I'm going to be way late or not so at all. I need to deal with some family stuff. MWintry, if you have a saved game feel free to host in my absence.
Sorry. So much for the dedicated host!

I will be busy with Back to School night/Cub Scout recruiting at the Elementary school and will not be available to start the Open Player Game until 8:00 PM CDT or later. Please check this ACS Forum Thread frequently and ICQ to see when the game starts.

This week is a bad one for the Open Player Game. I will not be able to host due to Cub Scout meetings tonight and attending a dinner/playhouse on Thursday. Usually, Monday is Scout night, however, I cancelled last Monday's meetings due to the hot weather in KC, tonight is a make-up Den meeting. And Thursday, well I won't skip going out for anything!!
MWintry, if you want to host and see who shows, feel free.
Hopefully, next week we'll be back on schedule!
(Sheila, Mrs. MacUser, says she's shocked! She didn't think anything could interfere with a Civ Game! )
