Hmm.... maybe we should build the Statue of Zeus and be totally awesome. That'd be my suggestion

Thanks SarcasmX.
In looking at the location, the hill to the east of the ivory would be a good location for a city. The only thing is, it is a bit too far away from our capitol (in my taste) to be our second, or even possibly our 3rd location. But it has to be in the top 4. The Lux bonus is also great, as it will allow our cities to grow up to size 5 with minimal garrison.
(IIRC - emperor game, first 2 people happy, one garrison, 2 lux (wine and now ivory).
We should seariously consider a selecting our second city with the idea of a production power house, to buils a barracks and Zeus ASAP.

Actually in an emperor game only the first person is content. All the rest are unhappy to start with.

Was this map edited (or "balanced by a map maker", whichever you prefer)?
The reason I'm asking is that it could have been organized that each team starts ever-so-close to Ivory, giving each a chance at the Statue of Zeus. I suppose there's no way of knowing for sure...If we meet someone and they have Ivory, we should be wary.

No not at all
Unalterred maps were sifted thru until one was found that had decent starting positions for all Civs.
No terrain changes were done from the map generator.
I think they went thru about 30 maps narrowed it down to 4 or 5 and picked this one.

exactly. we should found a fairly-productive city and begin a prebuild for zeus, as our capital will most likely be a settler pump anyway.

I'm thinking optimum is NE of Ivory.
Let's not waste the shield production from a mined hill.
(Food won't be an issue with those flood plains tiles)
As for being too far from the capital, have our 3rd and 4th cities backfill to connect it to our empire.

I like the hill location because of the defensive bonus. But you are right that to the immediate NE of the ivory is also a good location. Both have river access, so no aquaduct needed. And production may be a problem with all that desart and plain tiles (lathough the forest alleviates that to some extent.)

The regular plains will be self supporting with irrigation.
The 2 adjoining flood plains will produce a lot of food after being irrigated and leaving despotism. (There's actually a 3rd flood plains adviable after cultural expansion but that won't be needed unless the game actually lasts to the industrial era.)

Zeus.
Those Ancient Cavalry do two things: Give us a great weapon and tool for the ancient age, and provide a great backup in the event of a lack of iron.
Of course, I think we should wait until we've got a good few cities up and running, though.

Zeus only costs 200 shields! We just need a Temple & 2 Warriors to use as policemen (and the Ivory itself) to keep order in the city building it pending connection of the city to the rest of the empire and additional luxaries.
