AAW: 3rd Warrior Exploration / Luxury Slider?

the first issue at hand is wether or not we will be using the luxury slider. this isn't an issue usually handeled by the warmongers, but it is a very imporant thing to know right now.

simply put, we are going to need that third warrior for MP, unless we plan to use the lux slider.

Therefore, if we opt NOT to use the lux slider, the warrior has to be back in apolyton in 8 turns, meaning 4 turns of exploration.

i see 2 ways to deal with that:

i would suggest we move to the hill (with wines) west of apolyton, which is absent from the above screenshot. it's 1 tile west (4) of the wines in that image. that is 3 turns away from apolyton, well within the "operational range" of our warrior, should we wish to keep him for MP duty in 8 turns.

OR

we could explore the coast south of us, and head east for a short distance.

if we opt to use the luxury slider, then this warrior can freely explore. i would suggest sending him quickly to the southern coast, and then head WEST.

discuss.

Send the Warrior on his way. Use the Lux slider liberally. A few extra Commerce saved is not worth slowing down exploration.

I think the third Warrior should go N then W.

I think the true reason why we should consider leaving him is saftey.

We are operating under the muse that we are nowhere next to another team. But we have alread come accross our second lux. As a rule of thumb, its one lux per continent per civ. This means we (should) have at least one other team on our continent.

What happens if another team comes along with their exploring warrior and comes to our border to make contact and sees a warrior (not a hopolite) defending and moves in for a possible early kill. Now with just one Warrior defending, fortified in the capital, it IS possible (1.75 defense vs 1attack). Not winning odds, but the oppertunity to eliminate a large team like ours this early would be something most would not pass up.

(Not that I really think this will happen, but I just want to make everyone aware of the possibility.)

There's four teams in this game. That renders the "one Lux per civ per continent" rule-of-thumb highly improbable.

Not exploring will surely put us in an earlier grave than only using one Warrior of defense at this point.

What are we building next, a Granary? That means we can switch to a Hoplite at any time and thus be very safe from early aggression. Of course it would be annoying to trigger our GA so early, but when you consider how improbable it is that a team would actually Warrior-rush us, the "risk" is negligible. The important part is that our survival is near-guaranteed. I assume that's why we picked the Greeks.

I think if we pop out a second worker, yes, worker, then the discussion is mute. We get the grainary earlier (more forest chopping), we get the grapes faster. Think about it. We would get the grainary BEFORE we get up to pop 3. Sure, we go down to pop 1 for a couple of turns. So what. Our production will actually be faster by chopping wood that much more.

A worker is the way to go IMHO.
