We have not looked at f8 in ages and the backward aztecs are not yet in the modern era. We have we ll over 100 MA and are actually bombing cities down to no defenders before attacking. When...

The game rated our leadership as magnificant, however. So, that's something.

Nasty business. Was this a map with lots of islands and water?
At the highest levels that allows the AI to get those early wonders and run away with culture unless yo have another AI to stay in the culture race.
If you are going against one other good AI, that can spell trouble in the culture race.

What happened, i think, was that I was going around knocking down culture everywhere else and the Aztecs share was therefore rising. I think the map was small continents, or maybe large islands.

Ouch that hurts. I'd probably just be staring at the screen in wonder at that. Here you are going along nice and easy to winning and then all of a sudden "You Lose".

The most painful game I had was a Sid game that at around 1700AD I had gotten in tech parity and was doing well and got the same screen. You lose culture, it was hard to take.
The KAI swept the other AI's on it it's contient and I swept them on mine, so no was was there to keep the culture in check.
They had built many of the wonders and had those 1000 yr temples.
At least you had the fun of kicking some butt.

Keep playing. The beauty of CivIII is that the win/loss is but a footnote in the overall game.

I really had no excuse to lose. If I had just looked at f8, I could easily have landed a large invasion much earlier and taken the Aztecs out.

Maybe so, but now you have something to look back on and laugh. If you have noticed and won, you would not even remember the game a few weeks.

That sucks.
Every once in a while, when I have reached the culmination of a major stage of a given game, I try to pause, take a step back, and look at the big picture. Sorta like when working on a major Excel or Word doc, saving every time you've completed a big chunk of work.
Lesson learned: Watch out for those damn Aztec culture whores!!

I remember having disabled the cultural victory a long time ago, when I was still at regent, because I thought it was too easy for the human player and not funny.
I am now beginning with emperor and I have keep it disabled.
Do you think that at higher levels, I should enable it back? Is it really funny?

Since I have a strong "sandbox gamer" streak in me, I often check F8 and F11 - the better to admire the greatness of my creation! BEHOLD!
This has, on occasion, actually been useful, though I don't play on high enough levels so that the AI is actually a culture-victory threat.

In my current game (Monarch level) the Sumerians somehow managed to pack five Ancient and Medieval GWs into Ur. I'm gonna have to take that city out before they hit 20k culture, which never been a threat in any of my games before that I can recall. The addition of extra GWs in C3C no doubt helped.
They're also heading for hitting 100k total culture 'fore the game is over, but my culture is now about half theirs and growing quicker, so that's less of a worry.

My take is that above emperor it starts to be a problem and I have given up trying to win at Sid with culture on. The thing is that you need two strong or equal AI's to offset each others culture or you will have big problems.
This is because they have such cheap build cost that they will build those culture structures very soon. They will get most of the wonders from the first two ages.
The other thing is that you will find it hard to beat them down early as you move up the levels because they get so many extra units and suppport.
