That'd be ashame if they gave up on it, from what i seen it looked really good, there are some damn good uses for linked maps that i can think of.

They're not abandoning it, in fact (apart from Botf) it is the next one in the schedule
But it sounds too much like a civ2 improvement FW fashion(not a bad thing of course), possibly no MP.They have to keep it backwards compatible, so that should give you an idea.
