SMAC looks to be the best
Aside form the fact that I have always said "Follow Sid" because He made Civ I and II great there was a good interview at the game spot http://www.gamespot.com/features/alp...198/index.html
After reading this I am more convinced than ever that SMAC has the most potential than all the other civ clones

I they can balance that game, well then they are all gods of the universe. But i think it's impossible.
By the way, why is it called Sid Meiers AC since he has done almost nothing on this game?

Because he playtested it all the time, made suggestions, and co-designed. He just didn't code anything.

Since i love this game type i will get each and every game that is released, but i got the feeling SMAC will be...not quite as satisfying as CTP. Future Civ games have never been really intresting to me before although i tried alot of em.
Wonder if CTP also will be delayed till after christmas... It seem like it's a trend or something.

People, remember the lynch mob plan. If the game is delayed we get down to wherever Activision is located and tar'n'feather Lil' John.

Tar'n'feather? Old-fashioned. What we should do is wire his brain to a computer and force him to play games so poorly designed that he eventually snaps and holds the rest of the CTP team hostage until the game is released. Any ideas on what game(s) we should force him to play?

For the purpose of torturing Lt. John with a direct neural connection to a bad strategy game, I suggest Ascendency, Stars!, or Star Wars Rebellion. All of which are exquisitely boring.....

leave LT John alone! well as long as they get the game to me on time. to go on with the what franklin started i can't wait for AC to come out. okay it doesn't have the best graphics (ctp has the best) but AC does have costume units, the factions, 3D map, and so on.

I agree, these are some of the worst games ever made: Destiny, Stars, Star Wars Rebellion, and...(drum roll)
PAX IMPERIA!!!!
These are some of the worst strategy games ever made. Each of em cost me over 50 bucks. Thats over 200 bucks on worthless crap.
PLEASE ACTIVISION, DON'T DO THIS TO US!!
ho-hum, I wish companies wouldn't make junk like that, put it in a neato box, with some neato pics, and sell em to suckers like me.

I am not too consernced with graphics. IMHO Civ II did not have great graphics. Strategy games should focus on other things. If you want graphics check out Ultima 9 that should have some Kick ass graphics. But then I think it should because it is a role-playing game.
AOE? I have it but I am none to impressed. If you liked WarCraft II, then you will probably like it but it is not nearly as good as civ.

Tool,
I actually sort of liked Pax Imperia. It was a better game multi-player than single-player, when you could find opponents. The single player games were pretty repetitive. Either you died early or you built a huge fleet and had to spend hours and hours obliterating planet after planet in five minue-long battles which were all fought the same.
Ok, maybe it did suck, at least against the computer. I say hook Lt. John up to Pax Imperia too, but disable his neural net access for that one. But only if the game gets pushed past X-mas...

it seems to me that all the comparisons being made now are being made based solely on the sizzle... basically, we have to wait until the powers that be deign to allow us to purchase their products. they may find that the first on the market is the best seller... there are just too many heavily jonesin' civ freaks out here that want it and want it now! the first on the shelf will be quickly snapped up and played to the max before the second is purchased, played, and then compared to the first. in another vein, does anybody know how to get info on -the test of time-? i can't find anything, anywhere. i need some help on this one fellow civ-ers. what's really scary is that all three will be terrific... i'll never get any sleep!

st leo, thank you for the info, i think. does vaporware refer to something that is nothing but smoke and mirrors? i'm new to the forums on civ... but an old civ hand from the early days of civ1.

I'm beginning to think that there's little point in comparing them...
I, for one, will probably get both of them - each appeals to a different type of gamer in me
SMAC has the nifty sci-fi kind of stuff (I like the customise units and 3D map idea).
CTP has the historical aspect - not to mention one of the reasons I play: Romans in Space!!

Actually, after what they said in the chat about sticking to the same government type and considering that many units are government-specific, the two games are starting to look more similar...

I think the question, for me atleast, is which game appeals to my personal interests more. I'm simply buying CTP because it has mostly past and present eras in it, as well as a glimse into the future. As for SMAC it could be the greatest game ever(and might be, with you-know-who involved,) but I'm only slightly interested in Science Fiction. I've never watched Star Trek, and the only Science Fiction work which I've really ever adhered to is "Star Wars", and to me, thats more fantasy like. CTP however will allow me to enjoy my primary fascination with history. Now TOT, that could be one for the ages. Not much is known, but I've heard something about a map four times the size of Civ2's and 20 civs playing simultaneously. Such a mouth watering prospect!!!!!

Where? Where have you heard this? It's pretty much assumed that TOT is probably vaporware...we'd like to know your source!
