This year I have bought:

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Test of Time
Civilization: Call to Power
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Age of Empires 2: the Age of Kings
Seven Kingdoms 2
Gangsters
Unreal
Heroes of Might & Magic III

This year I've illegally downloaded :

Diplomacy
Age of Wonders
Creatures 3

And I'm glad I did, they sucked! Should have downloaded 7 kingdoms 2 as well. Nastiest game ever.

Narck I've heard that seven kingdoms 2 had great strategic potential. I played the demo and I couldn't get the hang of it either but I have to admit I didn't try too hard to get used to it. It seems like 7K2 is really not a game for the casual gamer and most people used to the usual RTS game will most likely hate it.

BTW do you have the add on for roller coaster tycoon yet?

3.Dark Reign+Exp.(Bought it last year, didn't like it, I'm getting more used to it this year)
4.Jagged Alliance 2
5.Might and Magic Millenium Edition(Consisting of M&M 4,5,6,and 7)
6.Age of Kings
7.Age of Wonders(It's ok, strangely, I usually see the intro a few seconds late, it's gotta be my hard drive)

Yeah, I didn't try either to get used to it, it was just too damn annoying

I don't know, but I think that a game that you have to get used to in order to appreciate it, is by definition (well, mine at least) a bad one.

I haven't acquired the rollercoaster tycoon addon yet? Should I? What extras does it have? How much does it cost?

mingko,

I didn't like AOW. You might though. In any case AOK IS a great game. Can't go wrong on that one. Why don't you try downloading AOW first on those warez sites, and then buying it if you do like it? That's what I'll be doing from now on. Since 7K2 I am surely not wasting any more money on games that look nice in the store but turn out to be a total disaster. Mind you, if I DO like the game, I WILL buy it to support the creators.

Starfleet Command.

Finally, a good Star Trek computer game! A few months ago, at IntgrSpin's urging, I downloaded the demo. I gave it a bad review because, even though the graphics were great, the game was grossly unbalanced. Later, I was given the actual game. So much better!! There's still a couple of scenarios which I believe are unwinnable, but most of them are very exciting. Plus, you can always bring up "Skirmish" and design your own.

I played the AOW demo for a while and it was Ok except for one minor complaint> the interface. You left click to select a unit and then left click again to move the unit. You have to right click to deselect the unit... similar to CTP on default mode. The graphics are cute and the tactical combat was interesting.

Narck, I only started playing RCT again after I bought the addon pack. I didn't really play much RCT because civ2/ctp took most of my time back then so I'm probably not too sure what is new or not. I'll try anyway.

New stuff in the roller coaster tycoon add on pack.

1) Crooked house
2) Circus (I love this gentle ride... you get to hear all sorts of circus sounds)
3) flying saucers
4) Rotodrop
5) Cycle monorail
6) Ghost train
7) Mini golf (YEah!!!... too bad there are only four holes but still it ROCKS!!!)
8) River ride

I'll quote the list of roller coasters of a source because I don't really know the difference between roller coasters.

1)Side friction
2)Heartline Twister RC
3)Flying Rollercoaster
4)Steel Twister
5)Steel wild mouse
6)Wooden twister
7)Reverser
8)Virginia Reel

also there are new elements to the roller coasters and you can colour each roller coaster part a different colour.

multicoloured balloons, umbrellas, hats, queing paths.

More wall textures, flower beds(There are quarter square flower beds now), a banner feature which you can make into no entrance sign.

New scenery: Dinosaur, jungle, Spooky, Abstract

2 new entertainers: Roman, gorilla,

A very cool feature: The ability to add music to any ride.

There are probably more features I haven't mentioned yet. I think the add on pack is good value for money. I think in the US it sells for around $20, not to sure though. I bought mine for AUS$26, a bargain price here in Oz.

Madden 2000
Starcraft (now that is the LAST RTS I am ever playing!)

This year I've laid good money on:

1. SMAC
2. CTP
3. MGE
4. HOMM3
5. RollerCoaster Tycoon
6. Office 2000 (not a game, but Publisher 2000 is fun, fun, fun.)
7. Railroad Tycoon
8. A collection of all the Might and Magic games from #1 to World of Xeen.
9. Caesar3

and this will sicken some, but just last night I finally got around to buying (and playing)

10. Quake 2.

I'll buy TBS God games and business sims at full price, but the price has got to come down hard for me to plunk down for a 3-d shooter or a RTS.

JohnT, starcraft is the best RTS money can buy. trust me you won't regret purchasing it, unless youre the type that absolutely can't stand RTS games.

Sith Knight, hell I still can't believe mine went out of date so quickly too. Now i spend my time avoiding 3d intensive games if I can. I got a Riva 128 what's yours?

Let's See

Bought
Game Rating ( 0 - 10)
CTP 7.5 (great concepts to many bugs)
SMAC 7 (not into Sci-Fi)
Ultima IX 2 - Warning do not buy, the game has an insane number of bugs, and it's virtually linear, BTW one of the bugs is mission critical so I can't even finish the Game.
Game Rank
Half-Life 9 What can I say a truelly best shooter yet
Need For Speed 3 8 Fun, great car game
EverQuest - 5 (Never play)
Caesar 3 8 Good, can't play forever not enough versatility

Freely Downloaded
Tons of Old games from Abandoned Games sites.
FreeCiv - a lot of heart and it's free, plus opensource.- best acquisition of the year.

Sorry for the delay, Monkey. It's an obsolete STB Mpact. Due to my computer being very picky on hardware, I'm getting a Voodoo 3 3500 when I get the chance. Once again, I forgot to mention another game I bought recently:

Warhammer 40k: Final Liberation(Pretty good acting for a B-Movie, great gamplay and music also)

This year I have bought:

Civ: CtP (yikes!)
SMAC
Alien Crossfire
Warlords III: Dark Lords Rising
Starcraft (ugh!)

I happen to dislike Starcraft and RTS is a misnomer. There simply is no strategy to these games and all you do is to build the mostest fastest. Everything boils down to who wins by attrition.

Well since It's the end of the year and I don't think I'll be buying any games in then next 24 hours..

1) SMAC (Completley Addicted!)
2) MOOII (Never played the original.. I love this game)
3) CTP (Purchased the day it came out.. Should have saved my money)
4) SMACX (Crashes on my system.. Hoping the patch will fix that problem)
5) Thief (I enjoyed this game but never finished... Guess I should reinstall)
6) Space Quest 6 (I'm a sucker for those type of adventure games)
7) Populous - The Beginning (Nothing like the Nintendo game I remember it as.. Deleted after a few days)
8) Lighthouse (Enjoyed, but some of the puzzles got on my nerves)
9) Zork Nemesis (Forgot I owned it! Maybe I should see what it is!)
10) Transport Tycoon (keep crashing my system)
11)Ceaser II - (Hated it! Really bad interface that I couldn't resize to full screen - 1024x768)
12) Probably a couple more not worth mentioning...

This year i've purchased:

1. Civilization II: Multiplayer Gold Edition
2. StarCraft Battle Pack (the one with Brood Wars, and the Strategy Guides...)
3. Half-Life (MIGHT get Opposing Force.. can't decide)
4. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
5. Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire
6. Heavy Gear II (bad game, in my opinion...)

I've spent the most time with smac(x)
starcraft and half-life have taken a whole lot of my time too, but nothing compared to smac...
i played like one day's worth of heavy gear 2 and promptly took it off my hard drive.... too bad i wasted my money.

I also enjoyed playing the Quake III demo, and lots of emulated nes/genesis/snes games for old times' sake..

Question for Sophanthro or anyone else who knows the answer...

What is FreeCiv?? where can i get it?
Is it basically the first one ? (with the source code set to be viewable???)

Genaciv,

From the FreeCiv website: "Freeciv is a multiplayer strategy game, released under the GNU General Public License.
It is generally comparable with Civilization II®, published by Microprose®."

For more info, see www.freeciv.org

1. Tiberian Sun
2. AOE 2
3. Alpha Centauri
4. NHL 2000
5. Caesar III
6. SimCity 3000
7. Heroes of Might & Magic III

In no particular order, all of 'em were worth buying (most of them for a couple of bucks of course...).
