Space Empires IV

For those that liked Moo2... this game is Moo2 on steroids! It is more complex than Civ and EVERYTHING is customizable! This game looks good... just needs more hype .

In case someone didn't notice, a demo (17 Mb) is available. Imran, you've got a good taste.

The link works great. I wasted most of today playing the game--and just crushed my first enemy empire.
Psst, Imran, the tutorial shows you what most of the icons are for. Praise be the planets with green asterisks!

Yeah, but the tutorial I found was lacking... what are those red looking sun things (radiation count?)...

Kinda. Your three building blocks are the blue crowns (minerals), the green clover (organics) and the red wheels (radioactives). In this game, radioactivity is a good thing.

Urb, check out the demo for Imperial Galactica II ... 132.3 megs. I've tried to download it four times (it takes about 13 hours), but the downloading has crashed all four times.

Sure.
The two easiest at to use the "go-to" command, and tell your ship to go to the final destination. The other way is to open the system adjacent to where you want to go and use the "warp" command on the wormhole.
Don't make your ship go through too many systems though, or it'll run out of supplies and drop down to 1-sector/turn.

OK, Game is pretty cool. But is there any way you can send a ship to a remote star system without guiding it through each system in the middle?

I bow to your superior patience. I wouldn't have touched anything the size of 17MB, let alone 132.3MB, without a broadband connection.
Perhaps you need to use a download manager such as Get Right so you can resume after a disconnection.

UR, you don't touch demos of 17 MB? You don't DL a lot of demos do you? 17 is SMALL in today's world. Most demos are 60-120 MB..

I dunno about this game being better then MOO2... Y'know, MOO2 was more Civ-like, so to speak. Darn, I knew I shouldn't have lent away my copy of MOO2.....

On a related subject, Reach For The Stars is coming out next week. Is this on anyones "must buy" list?
Personally, I think I'll wait and see what the big reviewers say.

Question: Does the AI seem dumb to anyone else? Maybe it's just the races I've been running into, but so far I haven't seen the computer player acting particularly intelligently.

I bought Space Empires III when there wasnt any sign of IV, and I'll probably buy IV as well.
The only thing that annoys me in the demo is the turn limit. The demo of III let you play as long as you wanted. (sigh)
Anybody here wanna play a game against me? (Just dont expect me to be too good)

So, did anyone end up buying this game? I just tried the demo again, played through the tutorial and am continuing on, seems like a decesnt enough game! (last time I had the demo I was short on time and patience so I never got into it )
Is this really a good game? Does it have a decent manual?

John,
Gamespot ( www.gamespot.com ) has a relatively recent review that seems to rate it pretty highly as a strategy game even if a little short on graphics. However from all accounts the manual isn't much to write home about and needs improvement.
I still plan on getting it though

I was planning to get it. The review as linked above said that it is not available in stores, only from the web site. This makes me pause about the decision as it is 40US and to ship to Canada is 13US. That's a lot of scratch.
I liked the demo, the game looked fairly deep and complex. I expect I will order it soon so I can have it in time for my holidays around Christmas!

I ordered it on the day after Thanksgiving, and then informed my that she had bought it for me for Christmas. It arrived on the 30th. I am already well into my first game.
I am creating a sizeable navy, I just discovered the "light cruiser".

Yeah, I feel the same way. I would like it but $60 does seem a bit steep.

Anybody is going to write a review for SE4? I read somewhere somebody got it as a Christmas gift? It would be nice to know what you think before deciding on whether to buy it.
Particularly, I would like to know how detailed tactical combat is. For example, if a ship of yours has 20 laser beams, can you choose to fire five instead of the entire bank? Also, can you have a large number of custom ships? None of these are available in MoO 2.
