An interesting situation I find myself in
I was playing an MP game last night with rah, empress and someone else (sorry forgot who). Yes I did get my ass kicked but there was a reason for that! I had a horrible starting location and I didn't found my first city until 2950. During this wandering I found several NONE units and huts and used them for exploration, and by doing so, I explored a large portion of the map. One of my more interesting discoveries, with one of my 4 archers I found empress's only undefended city on a river and I had 2/3 movement points left. So I was in an interesting situation, I could conquer her, leaving the game to being a 3 person game, or let her live. I deliberated this decision for several minutes and finally decided to let her live. I fortified my archer on her gold. Then several turns later, I had built my first city and I had sent my other settler down and built a city on her gold. This was probably the absolute worst thing I could have done, 1. I wasted my settler, 2. the city was too far from my capital to do any good, 3. it was 2 squares away from her capital allowing for very little growth. This combined with my very late start pretty much sealed the game for the other two players. Both of which did pretty well. I was wondering what should have been done in this situation? Should I have conquered her lone undefended city or just let her be, and very possibly greatly slow my expansion?

Huh? There was a choice?

As much as I respect Empress, and think she is a classy lady... take the city! Come on, you are playing a war game. Now, if it had been a diplo game...

i am with Ming here. You leave any city undefended, its toast. The people i play with would do the same thing. I remember two games with Ming and Zylka where Z found my cities and crushed me like a bug by 2950 bc, not once but twice in an hour, Ming had been swamped by barbs and lost his cap so we started a new one. Thems the breaks sometimes and thankfully he put me out of my misery. Yes being a lowly fourth or fifth power sucks at times buy hey, it all goes around and the respectfull players just play it out, with some *****ing of course Right Ming !!!

*kicks mingy in his knee*

What you did was very admirable Ceasar (not to mention saving you lots of pouting from me ). As Smash said, there is no honor in winning by taking someone's undefended capital at the start of the game.

Against the AI, I would do exactly what was suggested above... silly AI.

However, against a human, I would honor the treaty
(and kick myself)
However, any human that trusting should rethink that move, since I know many people would take the city

Ha, and i thought you apolytoners were so peaceful? Why is everyone encouraging him to take the city? I would have left it alone, you'll have the ally's trust for the rest of the game. plus if you've made it that far you get all the land you want and can set your own borders.

You should fortified on a border outside her city's radius. Let her use the gold with her capital without corruption, and if you spare her city she'd be happy to gift or trade a quick monarchy to you.
