I play Go
Father Beast,
Go is the most strategic of abstract boardgames. You can't play it tatically a la chess. You have to think of the big picture, i.e., how to capture territory. Losing stones (armies) is fine as long as you get more in return either by capturing territory yourself or reducing the territory your opponent has.
I guess that game of "stones" you mentioned is Go though I haven't read that series. I used to like fantasy but sci-fi is more my cup of tea now.

I also am intrigued by the game of Go, and have an old version of IGO on my computer. it doesn't take up much space, and it includes a tutorial "The Way To Go" The tactical complexities are way beyond me, though. Even on easiest, I get trashed by the computer.
incidentally, if anyone reads "The Wheel Of Time" series by Robert Jordan, I'm certain that the game of "stones" mentioned is really GO.
