Shogun: Total War?
I saw it recently priced at 20$ US. Is it worth the price? Would you recommend getting it?

Played Dark Omen? Almost a worthy sequel.
Of you havent played DO, game is worth it. If you have, just run it again and imagine it is happening in Japan

For $20, sure I'd get it. When you have way too many units in the field (and I mean like 10,000 alltogether for all the 'clans') the game slows down alot for me. But I only have 64RAM so thats probably it. I anjoyed it alot though. Good game for sure.

The tactical segment is good, the strategic segment is shallow, and once you played as every clan (including the rebels) once there's no replay value.
For USD20, I'd go for it.

Thanks everyone! I'll get the game today. One question though, What clan is the easiest to start out with?

My PC is a 3-1/2 year old Dell -- P300, 64 RAM. Given these specs, would I be able to play S:TW?
Or should I buy it now for $20 and play it when I buy an up-to-date PC next year?

Let's see.
You need a 4MB graphics card, directX 7, 500 MB HDD space, and 4x CD-ROM drive.

Depends. Oda has the cheap and powerful Yaru Ashigarus, Hojo is very rich, and Uesugi has its back against the seas.
BTW, there were some quite lively discussions on the game a few months ago so you might want to check the archives.

Hmm, Is there any special reason why the game refuses to play under the Windows ME OS? Would it help if I went back to Win 98?

No idea why it shouldn't work under Windows Me. It works fine under 9x. Have you checked the minimum hardware requirements?

I had no problems playing the game on a P450 with 64 Mb Ram and a good graphics card. Having said that I found the 1 player game unsatisfying after not too many hours gameplay. The strategic level economy does not really work. You are far better off churning out cheap troops and capturing half the board fast than sitting back and trying to upgrade to better classes. Unfortunately ther is no quick start option to give all players better buildings at the beginning of the game so you actually see them in play in time to make a difference.

Yaru Ashigarus are lousy unless you are Oda. Even then they aren't up to snuff really.

The yari are pretty poor except for defensive work like helping hold bridges or hilltops. Charging downhill or fighting disorganised troops they will win against samurai. My point was that you are better off using basic samurai troops to sieze more and more lands fast than trying to plough money into building improvements. It just takes too long to upgrade the castle, the dojo, the armory, the smithy etc to get any significantly better troop types. You could have spent those years successfully invading instead.

nvidia graphic cards have problems with the game. Only certain nvidia drivers work, so you may need to downolad older drivers. That is a well know problem ... if you have any nvidia chip from TNT to Geforce, same problem.

I have a Nvidia Riva TNT card. What site do you think would be appropiate to search for a driver?

I have the same card and I have played the game
I am pretty sure we sucessfully troubleshooted the issue. I dont know which drivers you should use (I played long ago) but you can ask this on news:comp.sys.ibm.games.strategic if you want (somebody asks every now and then)
Detonator 6.38? not sure, sorry
Drivers are on nvidia site, should be http://www.nvidia.com (?)
