Well, you're right : your 12th move was hideous. b4 was then not possible, I could castle queenside easily and the knight on b3 was a liability because the pawn was already on a3. A3 and Nb3 could not be played together ! For more general considerations, I think that the whole variation was not very promising for you. You accept to have less space than I do, so you have to think of freeing yourself and so you bring a riskily drawn position. Sure, you've got a sicilian with one more move, but it doesn't help that much. Otherwise, you played quite well, but that 12th move was a killer. I've got the intuition that an improvement was foreseeable in the 21th move, but I'm not quite sure. And perhaps that you should have played 14 h4.

Well I have faith in the English and its different lines but I have no faith in my play.I played a drab and sloppy game.I've seen better play in speed games!
I'm not too pleased about that as I wanted an entertaining and tense game if nothing else. This game was, dare I say, kinda boring. You played good moves while I comprimised my position then you just slammed the door on my shallow plan.
You are right about 1 thing in that one should NOT play anything "iffy" in this format. Its just not smart
Hope you don't lose interest before another game.I do learn a little during these ***** slappings
I met a Julius from Belgium at a tournament in California years ago.2400 FIDE IM....I wonder

Before we continue with the previous players, are there any new challangers in the wings?

Well, I am no 2400 player
Indeed I do not even have a Fide-rating, although my rating in my country is high enough to promise me one, were I to play against fide-rated opponents. And I won't lie to myself or anybody else : I'm never going to become an IM. Too old (30 years) and too lazy. But I must admit I had some qualities of a champion, great pieces play, position intuition and some fantasy; and lacked many other, especially tactical accuracy, ending technique, opening knowledges and nerves. I have pleasantly discovered that my main flaws were quite covered in correspondance chess !!!
I think that Ken is next and I don't know if anybody else is interested.
And yes Smash the english is a good opening.

I might be interested in playing. I'm not that good at chess, but you only learn by playing!

Go for it then Johnny. I've had my chance once and can wait my turn. If you haven't started a new thread by Midnight Tues, 7/17/01 Eastern U.S. time then I will assume that you have opted out of the line-up and will post my move.
As far as I know the rules still are that the challenger can pick their color and draws leave the defender with their title. Moves should be made at least every 2-3 days unless you make prior announcement of a longer absence.
Julius, please correct me if I have that information incorrect.

Well,I think we'd like to see you moving a little more frequently than that BUT one should not feel pressured.Obviously, some moves will require more thought than others.Any forseeable absence should be reported so there is no mystery and as a courtesy.
Good luck.
you're gonna need it

Take it away, Jonny!
Hope your "I have not played that much, but you gotta learn sometime"-attitude is a devious smokescreen; psychological warfare at its best!
