markus - are you willing to provide any details of optimal tech path, city spacing, settlers per city, sequence of improvements? So far, to be blunt, this reads more like a bragging thread than an exposition of strategy.

OK thanks for the answer. Now, how about improvements? Rushbuild them as soon as they become available, or concentrate on a few key structures? Granaries would help with growth, libraries with science, markets/temples/colosseum with WLY, but what comes first?
Whenever I try this sort of strategy, I find myself very short of shields. If I drain my cash to rushbuild stuff, I don't have enough for upkeep on all the buildings.
I think you meant to say "irrigated and roaded", not "irrigated and mined"?

Irrigated mined(hills) and roaded
Build up only a city or 2 at a time
Marketplace,(library), aqaduct, bank, col, cathedral, sewer, university, stockexchange.
once 2 cities are built up by 200 AD, you should be generating 100 gold and 2 turns a tech.. That should be enough spare gold to keep buying improvements + you have the gold from incoming caravans to your capitol

alpha, code of laws, burial, monarchy, --> trade --> Sanitation -->dem -->university --> superhighways --> computers.
Or you can just go to rep and follow the same tech path.
You only need 15 cities, spaced so that they don't use each others food, Connected by roads(+50% trade) & railroads(+50% trade), everything should then be irrigated and mined(adds trade as well) with 1 settlar per city.

Wanking is a rather self-satisfying activity.... from what others tell me....
But seriously, on the one hand I appreciate markus imparting his experiences in a rather open way that surely must help others, whilst others sit quietly on theit little secret strats
On the other hand, it's a shame it's so ego-driven and let's not forget that the civer of the year is Nappy who beat markus, arii and many others.
But, the 'Voice' is a weapon to be used in diplomacy and wars and helps build a reputation that surpasses the real skills of the player! Sometimes, as in life, sheer reputation will yield success if others, perhaps more competent, do not hold their nerve - LOL
I've heard at least one player state that Eyes beat them on the strength of Eyes reputation freaking him out....
It's Sunday here so this sermon could continue but I think I've wanked on enough already, eh?

I can confirm that wanking is very self satisfying.

Note that to research monarchy on the direct way is never possible .

Martin, I have done it, and seen others do it by selecting burial first.

When the game is from a scenario (typical for a premade map) you have no restriction regarding the choice of techs. You can go straight for monarchy or republic.
In a regular game you need a 4th tech to get to monarchy.

As usual, Markus has presented some very good ideas in this thread. I usually learn something when I see how he has disected this game. However, I take a slightly different approach in my civ growth strategy. Markus' strategy is mainly land oriented and requires two things: 1)Favorable terrain, 2)Intensive land improvement. My own growth strategy is more sea oriented. The 1st tech I go for after Republic is Seafaring and it allows you to build my favorite early game city improvement.....Harbors(my favorite late game improvement is Superhighways)....and then I can do WLTCD ad nauseum. The sea based stategy allows for faster early expansion IMO as fewer settlers are tied up for doing land improvement and can be used to found new cities. It is also much easier to grow cites with WLTCD with the increased trade narrows from sea hexes. In my last game against Markus I was forced to go into a sea based growth strategy since my initial starting terrain was so poor( my starting continent was over 25% desert/mountains/jungle/swamp). The final size of your cites is maxed out earlier as you can not irrigate as much farmland but I think that you can build more quality mid-sized cities( size 15-21 ) and ultimately work more hexes on the map. I will admit though that if you start with some nice terrain you can build a very effective large city of 25-30 that can generate very impressive trade after superhighways....I just dont reliably get good terrain on random maps.
